#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1942-07-07 (Post #5767)
Hello, darlings! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-clad time traveller, back with another tantalising tidbit from the history of the tutu! As always, grab your favourite pink lemonade, put on your most fabulous ballet shoes, and settle in for a trip back in time with your favourite ballerina blogger!
This week, we're pirouetting our way to 1942. The world's in a bit of a state, that's for sure, but let's not focus on the doom and gloom (although, that does make a good dramatic background for a performance, doesn't it?). Today, we're looking at the glamorous world of ballet and tutus! And boy, oh boy, are things about to get interesting!
(Sound of a steam engine chugging and a gasp from Emma as the train suddenly jolts)
Ooh, the carriage just shuddered - I must have hopped on the wrong train! Luckily, a quick twirl and I'm back on the right track, though I think I just accidentally transported myself right into the middle of the London Palladium! Let's see what this delightful dance hall has to offer...
The London Palladium, 7th July 1942
The air is alive with excitement! There's a buzz about the place, not only because we're smack dab in the middle of wartime, but because there's a special performance on this very evening - the one and only The Red Shoes! This cinematic masterpiece is a truly breathtaking piece of art. It features our darling Moira Shearer and a stunning choreography that sends my heart into a triple pirouette! The story, filled with drama and passion, leaves you wanting to pirouette through the streets and jump for joy! And you just know the costumes will be dazzling! Imagine - a full-length red satin tutu shimmering on the stage! Honestly, I'd wear that in my everyday life! But even the wartime conditions can't dampen the joy and glamour of the occasion! I even spotted some gorgeous pastel coloured tutus, it's all a little "post-war optimism," you know, even in the middle of hardship!
Speaking of pastels, the ballet world was bursting with colour, and the tutu is certainly not lagging behind. From delicate pink and lavender to vibrant blues and yellows, tutus are exploding in colour palettes that are making everyone swoon! I can't resist getting a little twirl in to match the glorious colours, they make me feel like a fairy!
This time period was absolutely critical for ballet as it was the time when the ballet tutu really found its wings! In the midst of the wartime, it soared into the public eye thanks to the film The Red Shoes. But don't forget those fantastic wartime posters. I've seen the ones featuring dancers - graceful and determined. And what were they wearing? That's right! Stunning tutus, and they were the ones bringing joy and beauty to wartime Britain!
More than a garment!
There's so much to be said about the evolution of the tutu during the 1940s. It wasn't just a piece of clothing, it was a symbol of freedom! With its lightness and flow, it represented a sense of escapism for those seeking solace from the darkness around them.
Imagine dancing freely as a dancer - as light as a feather and full of joy! This time period also saw the rise of ballet companies with innovative and daring choreography. Tutud design really took a leap too, you can see more details, intricate patterns, and unique embellishments coming in - just gorgeous! And who doesn't love a little embellishment on a tutu? It really makes a ballerina shine on the stage, you know, just like the dancers I saw tonight!
And so my darlings, we leave 1942 filled with the warmth of the stage and a sense of hope that even in times of darkness, a bit of ballet can always lift our spirits and add some delightful colour to life!
Now, I'm whipping my way back to my own time, just in time to go for some shopping on London’s most fashionable street - Bond Street! You’d think they wouldn’t know what tutus were here but you'd be surprised - the shop windows have some incredible designs this week. It’s definitely the most exciting place to be for a lover of fashion, and it certainly feels like a fairy tale compared to where I was just a few moments ago.
Speaking of fairy tales, remember my mission, darling? That's right, to get every woman in the world wearing a pink tutu! Until next Tuesday, stay fabulous and remember, "When life throws you lemons, wear a tutu!"
And remember, www.pink-tutu.com for all your tutu-licious content!
Yours in pink,
Emma
