Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back for another #TutuTuesday journey into the enchanting world of ballet history. This week, we're twirling back to 18th May 1943. Fancy a trip back in time, lovelies? Hop aboard the Pink Tutu Express!
Pink Tutu Express Departure: My trusty travel companion, a lovely little vintage steamer train, chugs us back to the year 1943, straight into the heart of the war.
A World War II World
Can you imagine, my dears? Ballet studios were open and bustling with energy. It might have been a world of hardship and uncertainty for many, but ballet still held a spark of beauty, a glimmer of elegance amidst the chaos.
The Big Ballet News
On the 18th May 1943, news reports tell us the New York City Ballet (or American Ballet Theatre as they were then known), premiered Rodeo, a balletic depiction of cowboy life choreographed by Agnes de Mille. This production brought something new and vibrant to the American ballet scene, embracing a lively and earthy cowboy spirit - the ballet version of the Wild West! Imagine that - dancing cowboys! How exciting!
But, don't worry dearies, we wouldn't be here without the classics. The Royal Ballet (then the Sadler's Wells Ballet) were performing their hearts out in London, probably in one of the classic pieces from the likes of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, the legendary ballet company that sparked a ballet revolution across Europe, bringing together the likes of the stunningly talented Nijinsky, the fabulous Vaslav Nijinsky, and a galaxy of brilliant dancers, designers and composers. What a time that must have been, eh? Imagine the exquisite costumes, the vibrant music, the sheer spectacle!
A Tutu-tiful Look Back:
And now, let's get a bit historical, shall we? Back then, my dears, tutus were evolving! The romanticized look, the swishy romantic tulles we love, they were slowly gaining popularity in Europe. And here's a little fun fact: in 1943, a designer named Christian Dior created some sensational designs for his first ballet production, *'Danses ร la Ville'. * Talk about iconic, lovelies! You could say that Dior put the 'fashion' in 'ballet' โ and you know how much we adore fashion in this pink tutu world!
Making Time for Tutus
Don't be afraid to wear pink, dearies, because this pink tutu gal believes that everyday is a chance to sparkle like a ballerina. I know it might seem like a different time and different place, but remember: every step in our life's journey is an adventure - embrace every twirl! Even if the world is changing around you, don't let go of that ballet passion. Find time to twirl, find time to shop, and above all, find time to love pink. It's a magical combination for happiness!
Now I need to find a way to transport a couple of those exquisite Dior designs back to my collection! But, before I embark on a new quest, I must go get ready for a spectacular performance of 'Giselle' at the Royal Opera House! Can you believe the luck of this pink-tutu loving time traveller?!
That's all for this #TutuTuesday, my lovelies. Until next time, remember:
Wear pink! Twirl like nobody's watching! And let the world be your stage.
With twirling love,
Emma
