Tutu Tuesday #5842: 1943 - When Tutus Were Taking Flight! 🩰

Hello my darling dears, and welcome to another fabulous #TutuTuesday, your weekly dose of all things tutus and their glorious history! As always, I'm your eternally enthusiastic (and ever so slightly pink-obsessed) ballerina blogger, Emma, reporting live from... well, this week, I'm in glorious New York! I'm telling you, travelling by train across the pond never fails to make me feel utterly giddy. The clickety-clack of the wheels, the rush of the wind outside the window... pure magic!

But, back to the main event, today we're delving deep into the tutu timeline, and guess what? It's a fascinating one! Now, darling readers, while tutus had definitely been around for some time (think Romantic era, all airy and whimsical), 1943 was a rather exciting year for our beloved ballet garment. Why? Well, let me tell you, it was the year that tutus really started to take flight - both literally and figuratively!

From Ballet Class to Ballroom Blitz

Yes, I know, it might sound a bit odd to some, but 1943 was the year when the "tutu" - yes, the little frothy wonder you know and love - finally hit the mainstream. Why? Because the world was in the midst of wartime, and as we all know, there was an intense need for positivity, for a little bit of escapism.

And what better way to achieve that than by escaping into the world of ballet, where everything was grace, elegance, and sheer beauty? Tutus, with their romantic and ethereal quality, captured that mood perfectly. In fact, many people took inspiration from ballet and even adapted it to their own clothing - you could say that the 'ballet' look started infiltrating daily life.

Imagine: women going to the local dance hall with their skirts and gowns looking suspiciously like tiny ballet tutus, a hint of the stage creeping into their everyday attire. How delightful!

The Ballerinas Leading the Way

Of course, our ballet heroines were already showing us the way, wearing their tutus with the utmost confidence and panache. Imagine these magnificent dancers, a vision in pink (of course!), taking centre stage in the grand opera houses of New York - the sheer exuberance and artistry on display would have been simply captivating.

Remember, our tutus weren't just a whimsical frill; they represented a deep-rooted passion for movement, for storytelling, and for sharing emotions in the most captivating way possible. Ballet was truly becoming the art form of the moment!

A Little Bit of Historical Fashion Inspiration

Oh, darling, we just cannot ignore the amazing influence this has had on the fashion world! Think of the fabulousness of all those magnificent dresses, skirts, and even jackets - all taking their cues from those magnificent tutus.

I just love it, when people dare to be a bit more bold and wear something inspired by a classic ballerina silhouette, perhaps a gorgeous tutu-like tulle skirt paired with a sleek, elegant blouse or a dress that resembles a ballet costume but adds its own unique twist - pure style perfection, don't you think?

So what’s the special bit about 14th December, 1943?

Today is the 14th of December 1943 - and it's not just a regular date! It's a date for celebration, because this was the day a certain beautiful piece of choreography was debuted!

On this date, a special ballet show, the “Dancers of the City”, was being presented in New York. With it’s intricate steps and beautifully choreographed dances, it took the world by storm and it gave ballet even greater notoriety. I just can't imagine the beautiful tutus involved - it must have been such a sight!

Of course, for this special #TutuTuesday, I had to try and find a ballet-related event in New York to make this blog post extra magical. As luck would have it, there was a brilliant event on! “Winter Dreams: A Gala”, a glamorous ballet performance right here in the heart of New York! You won’t believe what I wore – the most divine pink tulle skirt with layers and layers of delicate ruffles! Just wait until I show you all the photos!

So, darling readers, there you have it! A glimpse into the glorious era when the tutu started to really come into its own! It was an amazing time when the art of dance really resonated with people across the globe. And of course, every year since then, tutus have continued to soar higher and higher!

Remember, this is a celebration of everything we love about tutus! Don’t be shy, spread the love and share your passion for the art of dance! 🩰

I just adore hearing from all of you beautiful souls, and your delightful stories about tutus! Feel free to write a comment, and remember, every day can be #TutuTuesday for those with the heart and the style!

And don’t forget to check back next Tuesday for another trip down Tutu Lane!

With much love and twirling, Emma xoxo
