Tutu Tuesday #5865: A Trip Back to 1944 - The Tutu in Times of War!

Hello my lovely Tutu Twirlers! Welcome back to another dazzling #TutuTuesday adventure in Ballet Tutu History. It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina! I'm absolutely bursting with excitement for today's journey. We're taking a trip back to 1944, the midst of World War Two! Now, I know what you're thinking - war and tutus? Don't tutus belong to glittering stages, not battlefields? But trust me, my dears, the tutu story is one full of unexpected twists and turns! And believe me, even in the darkest of times, there's always a touch of beauty, a spark of inspiration, a glimmer of that Tutu magic.

The year 1944 was a year of immense hardship and courage. But throughout the conflict, the arts continued to thrive, offering moments of joy and escape to weary souls. It was in these moments, in these havens of beauty, that the tutu held a special place.

Imagine this: you're in London, the blitz still fresh in your memory. You're rushing to the ballet after a day of queuing for rations. The air raid siren shrieks. But instead of panic, you feel a quiet strength, a sense of defiance. You've made it to the ballet. You're wrapped in a cloak of the theatre's warm embrace, transported to a world where elegance, grace, and stories told through dance take centre stage. It's like the very air is tinged with a faint scent of roses and powdered wigs! It's that extraordinary, transcendent power that art has. And even though the times were difficult, that enduring passion for ballet persisted!

Today, 23rd May 1944, we're in the very heart of the West End. The world was watching the D-Day landings in Normandy. In London's theatres, life went on. On this very date, the ballet, The Sleeping Beauty premiered, a spectacle of shimmering costumes, elegant choreography, and sheer dramatic energy, bringing an era of fairy tales, romance, and escape to life.

My word! Just imagining it sends shivers down my spine. You can almost smell the intoxicating mix of floral perfumes and stage smoke, see the swirling colours, hear the rustling silk as dancers move with such beauty and precision! It was a dazzling escape!

As for tutus, well, they've evolved quite a bit since the earlier 19th century. While still maintaining their iconic silhouette - that fabulous skirt shape with its short layers – they became even more practical for the demands of powerful, energetic modern choreography. Even during war times, there was a relentless drive to find new ways to make tutus both beautiful and practical! It's not surprising that tutus continued to excite the senses, whether worn for the ballet or in some very special evening attire for the theatre's after-show parties. Just imagine, my darlings! The London socialite ladies sporting their stunning cocktail gowns with a touch of that romantic tutu inspiration! It's all just pure bliss for the eye.

Speaking of London’s socialite ladies – my goodness! Do you remember the wartime fashion rationing that swept through the nation? But it did not dampen those London socialite ladies' spirits in the least! It was almost like their inner creativity went into overdrive.

They'd make do and mend, adapting everything! Their skills and imagination soared. And just think - imagine them making do with those delicate lace trimmings, maybe even adding a hint of tutu flare to a plain outfit to bring out that inner glamour.

Oh, my! You can just imagine them as a tutu muse, inspiring so much with those exquisite details and ingenuity! We simply can’t let this remarkable resourcefulness be forgotten.

So there you have it, my dear Tutu Twirlers! Even in the darkest of times, there's a beauty to be found, a spirit of resilience that carries on! The ballet's story, and tutu story for that matter, is so powerful, it even injects some sparkle and lightness to the most challenging of times.

Now, who’s ready for a little shopping inspiration? There's a delectable new pink satin tulle tutu I just saw in a vintage shop on my way here to write this post! Oh, and I know you love to find new inspiration for your next ballet classes, so I've got a list of my absolute favorite vintage dance stores that just might tempt you to take your dancewear to a new level! I can almost hear the rustling tulle, can't you? It’s all going to be fabulous, darling!

Keep dancing,

Emma x
