Hello darlings! Emma here, your time-travelling tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet where all things pink and twirly reign supreme! Today's #TutuTuesday takes us on a trip through time to the 14th November 1944, right in the heart of wartime Britain!
Now, I know what you're thinking. World War II, tutus... doesn't sound like the most glamorous combination, does it? Well, let me tell you, darling, even during wartime, the magic of ballet endured!
First, let's talk trains. That's right, my dearest readers, I travelled by train! Just imagine, whizzing past quaint countryside stations in my pretty pink tutu! You can bet it drew some curious looks. Why, even the railway staff couldn't resist a smile at the sight of my lovely tutu! Such an elegant ensemble, even with the slightly drafty carriages and the shortage of petrol, it felt absolutely delightful!
Anyway, the day we’re stepping into saw London theatres buzzing, the nation looking for a little escape from the trials of wartime. And what better escape than a balletic escapade? Now, 1944 was a pivotal time in British ballet history. With many of the famous dancers like Margot Fonteyn still captivating audiences at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre, ballet was gaining even more popularity amongst the masses. And let me tell you, the performances were breathtaking!
The beauty of ballet even shines brighter when there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. There was a real spirit of togetherness during that time, you know, a sense of national pride that extended to the dance halls too. The audiences were mesmerised by the stories and beauty of ballet, they'd get lost in the art for a little while. They found strength, and even maybe a bit of comfort, from the elegance of a well-executed pirouette. It truly was a time when everyone, soldiers, families, everyone, embraced the escapism of ballet, and maybe, just maybe, took a little inspiration from its spirit.
Speaking of inspirations, I simply must talk about my gorgeous outfit for the evening, naturally! Picture it: a lovely dusty pink tulle tutu with delicate floral embroidery around the bottom. I simply couldn't resist accessorising with a beautiful ivory satin bodice that complemented the blush pink, not forgetting the most adorable little pearl hair comb! Honestly, the outfit simply exuded grace and charm, perfect for catching the eye at the grand theatre entrance.
And oh darling, talking about entrances, London was a sight to behold! Everyone was dressed in their finest war-time chic! I was utterly captivated by the women in their impeccably tailored suits, with scarves and hats for a touch of extra glamour! And you simply must have seen the shoes! Such creativity in those days – they weren't afraid to step outside of the traditional black and brown shoes, and their beautiful brogues were truly stunning!
My adventure wasn't only limited to theatres! Of course, a bit of retail therapy is a must! Shopping on Oxford Street was truly exhilarating! You could just feel the energy there. Even with wartime restrictions, the shops still displayed a beautiful array of hats, handbags and even scarves! The shops themselves felt full of spirit, buzzing with hope, and the creativity was absolutely inspiring!
While my wardrobe already boasts some rather fabulous finds, I couldn’t leave without a new little number. The perfect blend of wartime chic and wartime spirit. I bought a chic little hat with an adorable pink ribbon for an elegant yet patriotic touch.
14th November 1944, was an unforgettable experience! To be whisked back in time and see firsthand the enduring spirit of ballet even in wartime was truly special. It reminded me that ballet is more than just an art form - it’s a powerful force that inspires and connects us.
But even during those uncertain times, ballet always managed to create a sense of hope, unity, and a moment to escape.
Remember, darling, the only time is tutu time, so be sure to don your tutu for #TutuTuesday and share it with me on social media! I would be thrilled to see what creative and fashionable looks you come up with! Don’t forget to follow me on my ballet adventures on my blog!
