#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: 1945-07-10 – The End of the War! (Post No. 5924)
Hello lovelies! It's your favourite tutu-wearing time-travelling blogger, Emma, here, back again with another thrilling edition of #TutuTuesday! Today we’re whisked away on a magical trip to Paris, France, where tutus were – and still are – an absolute staple! Today’s date? July 10th, 1945 – what a date for tutus! Can you believe it’s been just over a month since the Second World War finally ended? Goodness, it’s good to be back in a time of peace!
Let’s face it, wartime isn’t exactly glamorous. The fashion was practical, the clothes rationed. Tutus? You couldn't even dream of finding one! But as soon as the news of victory spread, those lovely French women started craving beauty, joy and celebration. What better way to celebrate than by putting on a stunning tutu and heading to the ballet?
Now, let’s talk fashion. After months of practicality, a whole new world of sartorial delights burst onto the scene. We’re talking flowing silhouettes, luxurious fabrics like silk and satin, and an explosion of vibrant colours – just like my favourite pink! In 1945, French fashion embraced romanticism, femininity and joyful colours. Can you imagine the sensation a lovely, bright pink tutu must have been? Oh, how I wish I could have been there, twirling around those beautiful Parisian streets!
The Parisian ballet, oh la la! You can’t even imagine! With war over, audiences were thirsty for a glimpse of that magical, whimsical world of dance where you can simply float away on the breeze.
On this very day in 1945, July 10th, the **Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo performed "Scheherazade" by Michel Fokine at the Palais Garnier, the Parisian Opera House. Can you picture the magic of that stage? My gosh, wouldn’t I love to have been there with my own pink tutu on, swirling among those beautiful, strong dancers?
And of course, I'm absolutely obsessed with the amazing tutu history of the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. These dancers pushed the boundaries of fashion and beauty, creating such iconic looks. Remember the classic Russian Romantic tutu? We can trace the evolution of the tutu from the beautiful, flowing “Russian” ballerina gowns, a style that came to symbolise romanticism and graceful fluidity in ballet, to the shorter, lighter version we all recognise and love today!
And let’s not forget the beautiful ballet dresses, designed by such an amazing couturier like Coco Chanel. You might be surprised to know, the 1940s was when ballet really began to connect with the world of high fashion, and designers were thrilled to showcase their creative talent on stage! That was just the beginning, of course! And oh my, I have so much more to say about this!
So darling, remember the feeling you get when you twirl in a gorgeous pink tutu? It's the same feeling Parisians felt in 1945 when the world returned to colour and celebration! Let’s celebrate that joy, elegance and freedom with a tutu-fied journey into the world of history.
Oh, but before I forget – do you have any idea what day tomorrow is? It’s Wednesday, but to you, my darling time traveler, it's my birthday!! I will be posting about my incredible celebration day later today. Be sure to come back to the www.pink-tutu.com blog to celebrate with me!!
Keep twirling, my darlings! I'll be back next Tuesday, bright and early, to tell you even more magical stories about ballet tutu history!
With pink tutu hugs,
Emma 💕
