Tutu Tuesday: The Story Behind the "Big Tutu" (Post #5929)
Greetings from your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller! 🩰 💖
It's #TutuTuesday, and we're travelling right back to August 14th, 1945. It's a big day - can you guess why? No? Then grab a cuppa, sit back and let me tell you!
It's still wartime, with Europe just beginning to rebuild after a devastating conflict. The news is all about the war ending, the relief and the hope for a brighter future. Back home in Derbyshire, things are a little calmer. We're all celebrating, making do and dreaming of better times.
But right now, let's dive into the world of ballet! Did you know that the "big tutu", also known as the "romantic tutu" is making a big comeback in ballet? These majestic, billowing, poufy tutus have become iconic. Think Giselle - the perfect picture of graceful romanticism and tragedy, all in tulle and grace! These tutus have it all: romanticism, flourishing beauty and enough fabric to make even a feather boa jealous!
I am personally loving this revival! This style first arrived in 1841 when, for the very first time, the famous Parisian ballerina Marie Taglioni made an impact wearing one. It looked incredible on her - such beauty and drama! A ballet company based in Moscow, called the Bolshoi Ballet, are also rocking these massive tutus. And everyone wants to see their magnificent performances!
My time-traveling fashion eye caught a performance by the Bolshoi last week, and I’m tellin’ ya, the "big tutus" look stunning! They move and flow with such graceful elegance. I could barely take my eyes off the dancer's expressive moves. And of course, the tutus themselves were a work of art, layered upon layered with so many frills! It's just incredible! It’s a dream to wear one of those "big tutus" but I know it wouldn’t be as practical on a regular London bus journey! I do love tutus that make an entrance.
Speaking of entrance-making tutus, today we celebrate Margot Fonteyn! This legendary ballerina is an absolute star! It's her birthday. I simply cannot get enough of the elegance she shows. She embodies a kind of ballerina magic. So let's give a hearty “Happy Birthday” to Margot and wish her a truly wonderful day!
Now let’s return to that August 14th, 1945… the war is over! The whole world celebrates. The mood is a bit more relaxed than during the previous years and people are starting to dream of new possibilities. Even here in London, there’s a change in the atmosphere – a feel-good vibe and excitement that fills the air. Fashion is starting to shift towards colours and styles reflecting hope and fun!
We are definitely seeing a new era dawning and in a few years we will see some dramatic fashion shifts that will lead to some wonderfully elegant looks.
Right, my little ballerina fairies, time for a twirl before dinner! 🩰 I am headed to see a beautiful dance performance later this evening and I can’t wait to share with you the outfits and looks of the evening.
So, let me know in the comments - Which kind of tutu is your absolute favourite? * And as always - remember, *it’s never too late to put on your pink tutu! See you next Tuesday for another installment of #TutuTuesday. Until then, twirl on! 💖
