#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – November 20th, 1945 - Post 5943!

Hello darling tutu lovers! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet where we celebrate the magnificent world of tutus! 🩰 Today, we're stepping back in time to November 20th, 1945, to explore the history of this iconic garment.

You know I just love to hop on the train and take a jaunt to the past to explore the history of tutus! This week, we're in a particularly exciting era – post-war America! Yes, the air is still abuzz with the victory of the Allies, and people are eager for a bit of glamour and joy. But, more importantly for us, it's the golden age of ballet!

This date is significant because it marks the end of a very special ballet season at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Can you believe it, darlings? Ballet is booming! The New York City Ballet, still in its infancy, was busy bringing new, exciting work to the world. Ballet is everywhere, from Broadway shows to grand theaters, and even into people’s homes thanks to the wonders of radio! It's truly a glorious time to be a ballerina!

And just like ballet itself, tutus have become incredibly popular!

Now, in the 1940s, we're still seeing a lot of the romantic tutu (imagine long, flowing tulle) but something very exciting is beginning to happen – the rise of the modern tutu! We're starting to see the development of shorter, more fitted styles, designed for incredible jumps and incredible leaps! It's like a revolution in tutu design! Just think of the magnificent, daring leaps of ballerinas like Alicia Markova, the iconic ballerina who danced in Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. Oh darling, her dancing must have been mesmerising!

And, of course, I just had to try on one of these lovely modern tutus! (You can see the photo at the top of the post, don't I look fabulous?)

Now, I can't leave you without telling you about the fashion scene of the time. Picture this, darling! Tailored suits and elegant hats! A little bit of structure with lots of femininity. Fashion, just like the ballet, is vibrant, creative, and moving towards a more playful, modern style. I love how our passion for ballet shines through in so many aspects of our lives, and our outfits!

So, I leave you today feeling inspired by this fascinating era! It's clear that the tutu's place in ballet history is a vital one! And as for me? I'm off to find a stunning new tutu to add to my collection, and you better believe it will be pink! πŸ’—

Don't forget to join me next Tuesday for more #TutuTuesday delights, and in the meantime, wear a tutu with pride, my darling!

Until then, stay fabulous!

Love,

Emma x
