Tutu Tuesday: A 1945 Christmas Fashion Miracle! 🎄✨
Hello lovelies! 💖
Welcome back to your favourite #TutuTuesday ballet tutu blog - www.pink-tutu.com! This week is a very special one as we go back in time to a truly enchanting Christmas Eve, the 18th of December 1945. Imagine the excitement! It’s my 5,947th post and I’m still buzzing with ideas and loving every minute of my pink-tutu fuelled journey through history.
This week I’ve travelled to the heart of the ballet world, New York City! The air buzzes with the magic of the season, and it’s no surprise – ballet and the holidays are practically synonymous. It’s truly a Christmas wonderland here. It feels so exciting to be stepping back into time and experiencing such a significant year.
After a delightful journey on the train - and wouldn’t you know it, the conductor even complimented my exquisite pink tutu! - I stepped out into the crisp, festive air and was met with a dazzling sight. 🎄
Now, before I go on, let's talk about why I'm here: this date is especially important because it was just 11 months after the war in Europe ended! People were tired, and weary, but there was an underlying hope. I mean, it's 1945 - there's a wonderful kind of festive magic here, with carols echoing through the streets.
And talking about magical things, can we talk about the sheer joy of seeing my favourite New York department stores dressed up in Christmas finery, all glowing with Christmas lights? Imagine the thrill - glittering store windows displaying the newest fashions in clothes and shoes, with mannequins decked out in the latest designs! 🛍️
But you know what was the most captivating thing I saw today? Well, I found it tucked away in a corner, tucked in between the cashmere sweaters and sparkling party shoes – a dazzling vision of tulle. ✨
Now, let’s talk tutu history. 1945 and the end of the war brought a new wave of hope. And what does hope bring? The urge for self-expression! Imagine, a year ago people were fighting and worrying, and now there is a feeling of being alive. A hunger for fashion! A craving for something beautiful, for elegance and glamour - and I’m telling you, the new wave of tutus that appeared in New York that year were the perfect answer.
I felt my inner ballerina dancing at the sight! Imagine the softest tulle, floating around legs in all colours imaginable. Of course, I was drawn to a particular corner overflowing with shades of pink. From the softest blush to the most vibrant fuchsia – every single tutu was a dream come true! 💖
It seemed to be the era of the “full tutu”, the fluffy, multi-layered version you still see on stage today! It was more than just a stage outfit. You could say that these stunning designs took the dance out of the studios and into the streets. People were so smitten with their beauty and that joyous feel, they wore them to everything – parties, concerts, even ice-skating!
You might think, “But Emma, how can someone wear a tutu? Don’t they look too fluffy for everyday life?.” But let me tell you, darling, these tutus weren’t your typical, stiff, ‘stage only’ versions. The fabric was more lightweight, more playful. Think more cloud-like! And it just made it so much fun to put a little magic in the everyday! 💫
It was fascinating to see a whole new take on this beautiful garment, all these lovely designs. One tutu I spotted even had little snowflakes embroidered on the tulle! Imagine how stylish, chic and oh-so festive that must have been for all the elegant ladies back then! ✨
I took a little step back and closed my eyes, feeling the magic of Christmas all around me. My dear friends, Christmas of 1945 wasn’t just about the Christmas cheer and joy. It was the first real chance to let go of hardship and embrace life’s beauty! There was a renewed zest for life and an eagerness for glamour.
And what is more glamorous and lovely, darling, than a gorgeous tutu?!
This #TutuTuesday, let's all remember the spirit of this magical Christmas, a moment of rebirth. Let's celebrate the power of hope and fashion – a wonderful reminder that no matter what, joy can always bloom, and our love of ballet and its fashion can inspire the heart!
Have you had a chance to see a ballet performance lately, loves? Tell me all about your experiences! Do you prefer your tutus fluffy, layered, or simple and light?

Emma x
