Tutu Tuesday: A Little History from 1946!
Hello darling, welcome to Pink Tutu, your one-stop shop for all things tulle and twirls! Today we're on our usual Tuesday journey through ballet history! It's #TutuTuesday, which means I'm back with another amazing look into how this iconic piece of dancewear came to be. Grab your tea and your favourite ballerina biscuits - we're heading back to August 13th, 1946!
Now, you might think 1946 is a bit old for our purposes, darlings, but just hear me out. While our modern ballet tutu may be all about the wispy lightness and romantic fluff, the story of the tutu started right back in the 18th century! Remember, our lovely little dancewear isn't a fad, it's a part of art history and tradition.
Back in 1946, things were starting to feel much brighter after the war years. Life in the big cities, especially London and Paris, was buzzing with energy and new beginnings! Now, the Royal Opera House had already started its reopening season after closing for the war. We can all be thankful they're back up and running, aren't we?
So imagine my delight when I took a trip to London last week! The shops are filled with gorgeous fabric again - such colours and styles. It's absolutely amazing! We even popped into Liberty's, where I spotted the most amazing lilac fabric, perfect for a ballerina's dress, wouldn't you say? Oh, and the hat shops, absolutely delightful! Such a change from those terrible hats from the 40s - wartime didn't leave much room for chic!
Anyway, back to the tutu... in 1946, our little dancewear had already been making quite the scene! The iconic 'Romantic tutu' with its short, layered skirt was born a whole century earlier. Just think about that! We're looking at a classic that's been around for generations, bringing joy to audiences all around the world! This, my dears, is true history! It was all about freedom of movement, making the dancers appear weightless and effortless in the air.
Speaking of dancers, wouldn't it be absolutely lovely to be on a big stage right now? Just imagine the twinkle of the lights and the thrum of excitement as you hear the applause. Now, that is the ultimate pink-tutu moment! My very own journey started at the Derbyshire Royal Ballet School. The teachers were so strict back then, and I swear the tutus had to be absolutely perfect. There were inspections, rehearsals and endless practice! But those days set me up to pursue my passion for dancing and sharing the beauty of ballet with the world! You never know, maybe you'll join me and we can twirl our way into the past, too!
That brings us to the biggest question. How can we make the 1946 world a little more pink-tutu fabulous? Well, the simple answer is embrace your individuality, darlings! Be a ballerina at heart, even if you're not actually twirling onstage. Grab your most fabulous outfits - the ones that make you feel like a true star. A flowing skirt, a bright colourful top - wear anything that helps you dance and twirl with your inner ballerina! Remember, just like a ballerina, every day can be an adventure, full of excitement and elegance! And if you do decide to try on a tutu? Even better, darlings!
So what are you waiting for? Grab your friends, pop on some tunes, and get dancing! Let's create a wave of pink-tutu positivity, one twirl at a time!
See you all next Tuesday for more Pink Tutu history! Until then, happy dancing!
