#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 4th March 1947 (Post 6010)
Hello Darlings!
It's Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday post, and boy oh boy, are we in for a treat this week! As usual, I've taken a jaunt through time, my pink tutu swirling around me as I hitched a ride on the Orient Express - can you believe the incredible style in this era?! – and I landed right in the heart of Paris on 4th March 1947. Oh la la! This is where things really start getting exciting for tutus.
Now, if you think that the little tutu you wear to your dance class is all the rage, wait until you hear what I found. Just imagine – a haute couture dress so simple, so elegant, so groundbreaking – it makes even my little heart flutter. It's the iconic "New Look" designed by the one and only Christian Dior.
This dress, my dears, is everything a post-war fashion lover could dream of. Forget the practical, functional wartime looks. Dior was all about the return of femininity, the curve of a silhouette, and the grace of a flowing, A-line skirt.
And how did he achieve this? You guessed it! It all started with the tutu.
Yes, you read that right! This revolutionary design took its inspiration directly from the ballet. Dior himself was mesmerised by the beautiful flow and structure of tutus on ballerinas and incorporated this very essence into his iconic design. Isn't that utterly thrilling?!
Think of the graceful movement, the airy softness, the absolute perfection of that A-line – just like our dearest dancers! But let's be honest, the skirt isn't the only reason for the tutus connection. Dior's collection featured stunning ballerina-inspired designs, using sheer fabrics, full skirts, and dainty ballerina flats - pure glamour and fairytale!
This wasn't just fashion, darling. This was a movement! It marked the beginning of a new era, the end of wartime austerity, and a glorious celebration of femininity.
But wait! There’s more. This isn't just about Paris, my loves. We are seeing tutus everywhere – from Hollywood to London! It's an explosion of ballet-inspired style, and you can bet your best pair of pink ballet shoes that we're seeing some stunning tutus adorning even the most stylish socialites.
I even found a fabulous snapshot of a stunning actress, I’m thinking Marlene Dietrich… * in an unbelievably charming cocktail dress with a wide, frilly tutu skirt, dancing the night away with the most dapper of men. It was practically *Les Misérables meets glamour - and that my friends, is pure magic!
Now, you can't talk about fashion in this era without talking about the fabulous ballet shows! Can you imagine my glee when I found a postcard of Margot Fonteyn herself, dancing Giselle at the Royal Opera House in London! Her tutu, with its billowing white skirt and exquisite design, practically leapt from the card and spun right into my heart! It’s no surprise why ballet tutus have captured the hearts of women everywhere, with their inherent elegance, grace, and captivating air of enchantment.
Oh, darling, I must show you this incredible ballet costume that I discovered in a vintage shop. I nearly fainted when I saw it! It was a stunning piece of work – a sheer silk bodice with embroidered flowers and delicate lace trimmings, a bright pink tutu that flowed perfectly with every pirouette, and the prettiest satin ribbons! Just like something straight out of a fairytale!
Imagine – you're not only looking amazing, but you're feeling graceful and poised. It's the perfect mix of fashion and artistry, and who doesn't want a bit of that in their life?
My dear loves, don't think this is just for the fanciest balls and galas. Just like now, these fabulous ballet styles are making their way into everyday life. You can find hints of the tutu aesthetic in the street, on ladies going shopping or working! This beautiful trend has been adopted in a delightful mix of practicalities. Who says you can’t look like a ballerina even in your daily errands?
It's amazing to see how ballet has permeated the cultural landscape, just as it does today. Ballet, for me, is an endless source of joy and inspiration, so don't hesitate to try out some fabulous ballet-inspired style today! Let's make every day feel like a magical tutu adventure.
Remember, darlings, I have just scratched the surface here! Tutu history is fascinating and goes beyond the trends we see today. Stay tuned to next week's #TutuTuesday for another journey through time.
Remember to keep sharing your stories, your fabulous pink tutu looks and what inspires you. I can’t wait to see them!
And most importantly: wear your pink tutus with pride. Every day is a reason to twirl and celebrate our shared love of ballet and style.
Until next time, darlings!
