#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1947-04-01 – The Dawn of the Ballerina’s New Look!
Hello my darling tutu lovers! Emma here, your time-travelling fashionista extraordinaire, bringing you another enchanting journey through the history of the most glorious garment on earth: the tutu! Today, we’re waltzing back to the 1st of April, 1947 – a date etched in history for all the right reasons, both for fashion and for our beloved ballet.
This week, as I chugged through the countryside on a grand old train from Derbyshire (where else?!) to the heart of the world of ballet – Paris! – I found myself caught up in a whirlwind of Parisian glamour and excitement. You see, 1947 was a momentous year, my darlings! The war was over, the world was slowly but surely rebuilding itself, and a brand new spirit of fashion was emerging. Just think, in 1947, the New Look, designed by the brilliant Christian Dior, took the world by storm with its romantic, feminine lines and gloriously full skirts – just like a tutu, don’t you think?!
Now, this New Look revolution was happening at exactly the same time that our beloved ballet world was embracing a change – a change that, to this day, is the signature look of ballet. Yes, you guessed it, my dears! It’s all about those magnificent tutus we adore, those billowing, multi-layered beauties! Before this, tutus were shorter, less dramatic, and really just a way to give the dancers some freedom of movement – but not the iconic, graceful, show-stopping wonders we know and love today.
And guess what? Right in the heart of all this excitement, a very special event happened. A tour de force, you could say. A ballet company called the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, was staging the legendary ballet “Giselle” right here in Paris. Now, “Giselle”, this is a ballet you just have to see, my darlings! The story, the emotion, the pure artistic beauty – it just blows me away! But imagine, if you will, witnessing this ballet, with that story, with that dance, and with the New Look tutus, taking their very first, dazzling bow on the Parisian stage. Magnificent, don't you think?
Speaking of magnificence, Paris is bursting at the seams with incredible shops right now, darling! If I wasn’t so busy researching my fabulous #TutuTuesday posts, I’d be shopping like mad! From haute couture dresses with the most charming A-line shapes to a simply fabulous collection of hat shops and shoes to die for, Paris really does hold a special place in my heart, for its sheer style and panache. But you know, I always end up back in my beloved pink tutu at some point in the day!
Speaking of that perfect pink tutu... This is what the world really needs, darling. We need to make the world pinker, brighter, and filled with twirling fun! I'm doing my part by spreading the good news of ballet and the wonder of the tutu, and I truly believe that you can all contribute by twirling your own way, embracing a bit of tutu magic.
So, until next Tuesday, stay fabulous, and never be afraid to twirl in a tutu! And for a sneak peek of my next adventure, you can always follow me on Instagram! Remember to join me at www.pink-tutu.com, too!
Love,
