This week, we're whisking ourselves back to a fabulous era of elegant silhouettes, daring styles, and oh-so-much pink. Grab your favourite teacup and settle in, because today we're twirling through November 4th, 1947!
Post #6045: Backstage at a Ballerina's Wonderland
This week, I found myself in the vibrant heart of London, the ultimate centre for the enchanting world of ballet. The energy in this city crackles with an exquisite combination of old-world charm and modern excitement - think plush velvet theatre seats juxtaposed with sleek department store windows, all whispering stories of graceful movement and stunning attire!
It’s truly an intoxicating blend, and the magic starts with the dancers. They seem to float on air, their tutus a cloud of billowing fabric. While my current time-travelling tutu collection is a bit more modern (just look at my dazzling pink tulle creation, my darlings!), I must say, I adore the elegance and simplicity of the classic tutus in 1947. They’re timeless and radiate pure grace.
Speaking of graceful, today is November 4th, 1947. Do you know what that means? It’s the day The Royal Ballet, in all their glory, opens the season at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden! I’m simply thrilled to be witnessing this momentous occasion - a glorious night of music and movement in one of the world’s most iconic theatres. You can just feel the electricity in the air as the grand curtain rises and the dazzling lights bathe the stage.
Fashion Trends of 1947: A Ballet Lover's Delight!
Of course, I couldn't resist taking in the post-war fashion trends while I was here. There's a vibrant mix of playful elegance and refined femininity, perfect for our lovely ballerina friends! The emphasis is on accentuating the feminine silhouette: nipped-in waists, graceful flowing skirts, and a return to the iconic Dior “New Look”. You see the influence of this in dance too, with designs emphasizing graceful, yet powerful lines, not just the frilly, impractical tutus that some might imagine!
And speaking of the Dior "New Look," I adore how its inspiration from the ballet is so apparent! With its flowing skirts, and carefully sculpted feminine lines, it makes every woman feel like a ballerina. It is all about graceful, expressive movement. The designers of the era understood the allure of the tutu, and translated that into everyday fashion! It's truly enchanting!
But the thing that always fascinates me, as I bounce around in my pink tulle creation, is just how many different tutus there are. From the delicate tulle and silk to the shimmering satin and velvet, I'm a sucker for the versatility of tutu designs - and of course, that heavenly pink!
London, You're So Exquisite!
This charming city also holds a very special place in my heart for its fashion, from the chic boutiques of Mayfair to the dazzling windows of Harrods. I'm always on the lookout for unique pink tutu additions to my wardrobe! I found myself browsing through Liberty’s, their elegant designs are breathtakingly beautiful - I think I fell in love with a floral print tutu on silk today. The perfect splash of vintage flair for a tutu lover like me. Oh! And have I told you about Fortnum & Mason’s? They have a fantastic selection of fabrics for my DIY projects - just you wait till you see what I create next!
You simply cannot deny the power of London! From its exquisite dance theatres and breathtaking fashion to the warm hospitality of the locals - a city truly enchanting. I can't wait for next time, to twirl through this city's hidden nooks and captivating culture, perhaps catch a performance by the illustrious Sadler's Wells ballet - all in the name of tutu love!
