#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 16th December 1947 - Post Number 6051! 🩰💖
Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, ready to whisk you back in time with another fabulous #TutuTuesday post. As always, let's kick things off with a twirl and a big, pink, "Bonjour!"
This week, my trusty time machine (which is really just a rather fancy first-class train ticket - gotta keep those expenses down!) has brought me all the way to the 16th December 1947, the heart of London, darling! Imagine a London draped in festive lights, with snow crunching underfoot, the smell of roasting chestnuts wafting through the crisp air. Ooh, I simply adore Christmas in London, wouldn't you agree?
So, where do tutus fit into this merry scene? Well, this particular Tuesday found Londoners absolutely buzzing for a dazzling double-header at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, dear readers. A most-anticipated double bill! The first performance of "Giselle", featuring none other than the exquisite Margot Fonteyn, darling! She's a true queen of ballet. This was followed by the "Concert Romantique" featuring a performance of "The Dying Swan", which everyone is just swooning over! Can you imagine the sheer beauty? Honestly, these two shows would have had everyone in the audience twirling their toes and wishing they were wearing a glorious tutu of their own.
Speaking of tutus, darling, what were the dancers sporting in 1947? Oh, well, let me tell you, they were certainly embracing the glamorous romanticism that was so popular at the time! Picture romantic, billowing skirts in pale pinks and blush hues, layers upon layers of soft tulle for that dreamy, ethereal effect. Imagine a ballet dancer spinning, their skirt seeming to defy gravity and twirl in perfect unison with the music, and you'll understand why those 1940s tutus held such a spellbinding quality! And speaking of pinks... you know what else was huge in 1947? Pink! Oh, the colour pink! From pastel candy hues to rich, almost magenta shades, pink was the it colour of the season for both clothes and the gorgeous tutus of the time!
This pink love affair is what's got my heart racing this #TutuTuesday. We may have a bit of a tutu evolution over time (who could resist that ever-present, exciting change?), but something I truly love is how we've always incorporated those iconic pink tones into ballet design. From romantic, shimmering pinks to bright, vibrant magenta hues - those lovely pink tutus truly transport us to a realm of feminine charm and utter glamour.
And oh, what else can I share with you from the fabulous fashions of the time? Oh, you’ll simply love the glamour darling. From lavish evening gowns to playful daytime looks, the fashion in 1947 is the epitome of chic and feminine elegance. Think exquisite, full skirts cinched at the waist with delicate bows or flowers. We’re seeing gorgeous silhouettes and playful colours all tied together with delicate details and statement hats. Imagine yourself strutting around London in a fitted skirt with a full-pleated, poofy skirt and an adorable bow hat for your shopping spree at Harrods. Pure, feminine elegance!
Honestly, when it comes to fashion, London was really making its mark back then! So many incredible designs and a spirit of elegance and fun that, to be honest, really hasn’t changed all that much!
Anyway, darlings, we've had our lovely little trip to the glorious 16th of December 1947. Now, I have some homework for you: Have a little ponder over what you love most about tutus and about your own wardrobe's ‘50s-style romantic looks. Let's carry a little bit of that elegant charm into our modern world!
