Tutu Tuesday: #6070 – Whirlwind of a Time Travel! (April 27th, 1948)
Hello my darling darlings, and welcome to another splendid Tuesday!
As you know, this is my weekly delve into the fabulous history of the tutu! A journey that always takes me spinning through time in a delightful fashion – literally!
Now, today's journey lands me smack bang in 1948, in the heart of Paris! The very epicentre of style and fashion! My trusty time-travelling boots landed me on a cobbled street lined with charming Parisian shops – it's a little slice of heaven! And even more divine, I found myself a mere hop, skip, and a pirouette away from the Opéra Garnier!
Imagine, darling, the opulence and excitement swirling in the air around the Palais Garnier. That majestic building has always been the heart of the ballet world, don’t you think? Just stepping inside feels like stepping into a fairytale. The plush red velvet seats, the golden chandeliers, the sense of anticipation – it’s enough to send a ballerina's heart fluttering with delight!
And this being Paris, we can’t forget the fashion! I just adore the classic elegance of Parisian style in this era. Think sleek and stylish gowns, exquisite hats and of course – divine shoes! I have the strongest feeling I’m going to add to my collection whilst I’m here! The cobbled streets are filled with chic ladies, all vying for the perfect picture. They definitely know how to strut their stuff!
I just adore watching the world go by, observing those fascinating glimpses of bygone styles and soaking up the energy of this fabulous city. This, my lovelies, is the real world! But the one I absolutely can't live without is, of course, the ballet world.
I'm here to soak up the sights, sounds, and stories of the world's leading ballerinas, to feel the energy of the rehearsals and performances, and to breathe in the spirit of artistry that fills the very air. I just know there will be so much inspiration to be found here!
This is also the day that my heart beats a little bit faster because I know tonight… there's a ballet! Tonight, the Opéra Garnier is showcasing Sergei Prokofiev's "Cinderella". Oh my word, you won't believe the divine music! It's the kind of music that transports you to another world and it truly encapsulates the romance and magic of the story. Can't you just see the dazzling tutus twirling and swirling across the stage, and hear the music soaring above the heads of the captivated audience?
Honestly, this is what my dreams are made of. The combination of tutus, trains and magical ballet shows is just absolutely my cup of tea!
So, back to the tutu history part. In 1948, the ballet world was really taking a leap into the future! The focus is still very much on classic techniques and stunning choreography, of course. But in that, you have to imagine that the classic, bell-shaped tutus, are starting to become even more dazzling and elaborate. Imagine them being adorned with intricate details, hand-sewn sequins, and luxurious fabrics. They are becoming increasingly dramatic and powerful statements. A true embodiment of artistry!
You’re right to assume I've been doing some research… The grand ballerinas of the day, the legendary dancers like Alicia Markova and Margot Fonteyn, are still gracing the stage. They are all absolute icons and absolutely breathtakingly talented! Just as much so as their tutus!
For the next few days, I'll be exploring Paris – the boutiques, the shops, and the sights and then I'll be diving back into the whirlwind of ballet shows. Because even in 1948, Paris knows how to deliver the most fantastic entertainment!
Remember my loves – Embrace the joy of movement and wear your heart on your sleeve (or, in our case, your tutu!) Until next week, when I’ll be telling you all about my adventures in ballet fashion!
Keep it pretty,
Emma
