#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post #6077 - 15th June 1948: A Dreamy Parisian Afternoon!

Bonjour mes chùres amies! It’s Emma here, your tutu-loving time traveller, ready to whisk you away on another journey through the wonderful world of ballet. Today we’re waltzing our way back to 1948, to a Parisian afternoon bursting with sunshine, chic fashion, and a balletic beauty that'll make your heart soar!

The date? The 15th of June, 1948.

As I step off the train at Gare de Lyon, the scent of freshly baked bread and blooming roses tickles my nose. Paris is a symphony for the senses, even more so in the springtime. And, I must confess, I'm utterly smitten with the way even the most mundane things are presented in such an artistic light. Look at the way they weave floral decorations into their street markets! Look at the way those pigeons on the Place de la Concorde are trained to bow their heads for the tourists!

I, of course, am making my way to the legendary Palais Garnier – the glorious, ornate jewel of Parisian opera and ballet. Today's performance? A spectacle called "La Fille Mal GardĂ©e," or, if you’re as fond of the English language as I am, “The Ill-Guardianed Girl!” Imagine: a lively, delightful tale of love and misunderstandings told through the expressive grace of dance and beautifully embroidered tutus. Just picture a pastel pink tutu with floral detailing! It's enough to make my inner ballerina squeal with joy!

What was the Paris fashion scene like in 1948?

I wouldn’t want to skip past this, darling. Even a fashion-focused time traveller needs to acknowledge the captivating couture scene in this period. Paris is known for its incredible design talent and fashion shows are happening almost weekly, if not more. It was a truly incredible time to be interested in fashion and ballet! It’s no wonder that I am tempted to abandon my little trip to the past in favor of strolling through all the magnificent shops around the Champs-ÉlysĂ©es – there are more exquisite designs there than you can imagine! I’m picturing delicate evening gowns, elegant silk skirts, and charming, little pillbox hats! A whole palette of beautifully-hued shoes in rich colours and delicate heels: velvet, leather, and satins.

You can certainly see why the Ballet Tutu History blogger is enthralled by fashion trends from this era!

Back to our ballet!

Inside the Palais Garnier, I’m surrounded by a swirling orchestra and the chatter of elegant ladies and dapper gentlemen, all dressed to impress. There are beautiful long gloves and furs and a sense of sophisticated delight in the air! In those moments, I almost believe I’ve been swept into a Parisian fairytale!

"La Fille Mal GardĂ©e” is quite the spectacle.

I find myself spellbound by the artistry of the dancers, particularly their exquisite footwork, effortless pirouettes, and those grand jetĂ©s that seemingly defy gravity. The audience erupts in enthusiastic applause - the French love their ballet! For them, ballet is as essential to their way of life as croissant and a steaming cup of cafe au lait. A moment like this makes me long for a little Parisian “apres-ballet” time spent sitting outside at a cafe sipping coffee and discussing the ballet!

As I make my way home later that evening, the city's charm clings to me. The day’s been a journey back in time but also a chance to embrace my deep-rooted love of both fashion and dance. It's the kind of day that would inspire even a quiet country lass like myself to grab her own pink tulle and dream of twirling amongst the most captivating locations of Europe!

What a journey this is – one full of passion and beauty. Join me again next week as we step back through history! But in the meantime, remember: a little pink tulle and a playful attitude go a long way!

Sending you all the most twirlingly, delightful kisses,

Emma xoxo
