#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1948-07-06 - Post No. 6080

Bonjour, mes amies!

It’s your favourite pink tutu-wearing blogger, Emma, back with another dose of history on the magical world of tutus. Today’s journey whisks us back to a glamorous era – 1948! Imagine the excitement of leaving the war years behind and embracing the burgeoning spirit of optimism. And, darling, who better to lead the charge into a bright future than a tutu-clad ballerina?

Now, 1948 – a pivotal year for the ballet world. Imagine Paris, a vibrant metropolis abuzz with creative energy. My latest time-traveling adventure brought me right to the centre of this charming city! Stepping off the train from my previous stop in Derbyshire, I was immediately enveloped by a wave of chic Parisian energy. Imagine, my darlings, elegant Parisians strolling past elegant boutiques, bustling cafes brimming with animated chatter, and the streets alive with a rhythmic hum of Parisian charm.

The magic of Parisian ballet, however, was the real reason for my journey. Paris is the heart of the ballet world and it’s impossible to truly appreciate a tutu without understanding its history and how it evolved within this magical space. And let's be honest, I have a serious obsession with tutus! The twirling possibilities! The whimsical silhouettes! Oh my, they are absolutely divine.

Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes, 1948! My biggest highlight for this trip was seeing Le Lac des Cygnes, otherwise known as Swan Lake! Imagine the sheer elegance, the swirling dancers, the exquisite costumes – and of course, the stunningly beautiful tutus! You could see how much emphasis was placed on every detail: the exquisite embroidery, the feather-light tulle that moved like a gentle whisper – pure magic.

Of course, I couldn’t leave without adding a few new pieces to my wardrobe. What's a pink-loving blogger like me without an ever-growing collection of tutus? Think a soft blush pink tulle, so airy and romantic, or a dramatic fuchsia satin tutu for the stage, a bold choice for the flamboyant ballet lover. But I won't deny I did add a delicious, bubblegum pink feather boa to my collection. It just brings that little extra bit of "ooh-la-la" to any outfit. It would certainly add a touch of playful charm to any ballet rehearsal outfit.

It wasn't all about tutus in 1948. The fashion scene was simply buzzing. While I found myself utterly enthralled by the beautifully tailored dresses in all the shops on rue de la Paix, let's be honest, the main focus of my fashion wanderlust was always going to be the ballet stores! Every shop I entered, there was an absolute explosion of glorious fabrics – silken chiffons, velvety satins, shimmering sequins and softest tulle, all waiting to be transformed into the most extraordinary ballet garments.

And it's no wonder, my loves! The ballet is all about a love for beauty, art, and performance – things that go hand-in-hand with the magical world of fashion! And we can't forget the glorious ballet slippers. Imagine them, my dears – delicate pointe shoes that gave dancers the grace and poise of a feathered swan! As a dedicated student of dance, I've been perfecting my pointe work for years, and believe me, there is a certain magic to dancing en pointe! It's all about finding that delicate balance between strength and grace, much like the ballet itself. I can just picture my future pink tutu and poin shoe matching set. And oh, I would need a pink feather boa, the ultimate ballerina accessory!

Paris 1948 really showed me how powerful and versatile a tutu truly is, but this was about so much more than a piece of clothing. It was about a community, a shared language of dance, beauty, and pure joy. After attending a magnificent Parisian ballets performance this weekend – nothing can beat a performance where passion and dedication interweave seamlessly, the choreography weaves its magic and tutus take centre stage - the ballet really opened my eyes to how this elegant piece can create so many incredible stories, and how each performance becomes a living history, a reflection of the world's evolving narrative.

What do you say, my darlings? Shall we embrace this glorious history together? Join me next Tuesday as I journey even further down the fascinating timeline of tutu history. Remember, you don't need to be a ballerina to love the beautiful world of tutus! You can be your own ballerina queen with a little pink tutu, a big smile, and a whole lot of love!

And, darling, you never know when that amazing time travelling opportunity will just pop up for you. Just try wearing a tutu to ballet class or a ballet show - I bet that would be an incredible journey too!

Until next Tuesday, stay beautiful, stay positive, and wear your pink tutu proudly!

XOXO,

Emma
