#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: August 17th 1948! (Post #6086)
Hello, darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu, your one-stop shop for all things ballet, tutus, and a healthy dose of pink! Today, we're stepping back in time to a rather glamorous era - 1948! Imagine it, folks, the world just starting to recover from a big ol' war, but oh, how those tutus twirled on!
Right, let's hop aboard the time machine and land ourselves in Paris. Why Paris? Well, darlings, this city is pretty much the epicentre of all things tutu! The Opera, the shows, the shops, it's just brimming with beauty. Now, let's go back in time, put on a glamorous 40s-inspired frock and let's take a gander at some Tutu Tuesday History!
The Ballerina’s Wardrobe: A Symphony in Pink and FeathersBack in 1948, tutus were going through a little bit of a revolution. The war had changed things a bit, and the grand, voluminous tutus were now seen as a bit extravagant, a touch too much even for the Parisians!
This didn’t mean tutus disappeared, darling! No, they just went through a bit of a "slim down" to better reflect the New Look styles. These tutus were shorter, with a slightly more fitted silhouette and were just bursting with personality. And remember those iconic feather headdresses that everyone is so in love with these days? Well, let's just say they were pretty popular then, and all the better for adding that extra touch of sparkle to the ballet's visual delight.
Fashion at the Folies BergèreBut let’s be honest, darling, ballet isn't the only place you'd see a fantastic tutu! It’s Folies Bergère that truly gives tutus their stage. Oh, what an extravagant delight! There’s nothing quite like catching the show there, with the feather boas, the rhinestones, the glittering costumes – truly spectacular!
Now, imagine all those fabulous Folies Bergère girls twirling away in exquisitely feathered tutus, those flamboyant costumes, all just oozing confidence and glamour, the envy of the entire city! They had such a flair for theatricality!
Speaking of tutus, did you know that back then they were often made from tulle, a super delicate, very feminine material? And the colour? Pink, of course!
I'm going to take you on a tutu tour now. Grab your purses and come along! We're heading to the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré for some fantastic shop visits.
Tutu Shopping at the Rue du Faubourg Saint-HonoréDarling, the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré is a fashion haven! Oh, to be in Paris in the 1940s, just soaking up all that Parisian charm. High-end fashion houses were everywhere!
You know, this street was once home to the likes of the legendary Jacques Fath, a truly revolutionary fashion designer! Just the idea of him filling the air with fabric, creating dramatic, feminine silhouettes … you can just imagine, darling! The tutus he might have been able to inspire, oh my goodness! And there’s no way that he’d leave those magnificent ballerinas to their standard wardrobe! He’d have been the first to bring a new level of extravagance to ballet design.
Now, darling, let's imagine ourselves walking along that iconic Parisian street. You might bump into a few stars, a few socialites! You see a beautiful ballet dancer dressed in the most spectacular pink tulle tutu, she might just have walked out of a Jacques Fath showroom, wouldn’t that be a story to tell?!
You know, these glamorous ladies wouldn't be caught dead wearing just any tutu. It's gotta be pink, darling, pink! Pink was all the rage in the 1940s. If we go back in time, even the fashion icon Dior favoured pale pinks, rose-blushes and bright fuschias. So darling, this era screams for a pink tutu - even the fashion magazine covers say it all!
I don’t want to give away all the secrets of time travel just yet, so back we go to today.
