#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: February 8th, 1949 (Post 6111)
Hello lovelies! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here! Back again for another #TutuTuesday, bringing you the very latest from the world of dance! I'm so thrilled to be in the glittering heart of ballet – New York City – for this week's post. The energy here is simply electric! And with Valentine's Day just around the corner, I've got the most fabulously romantic outfit – think heart-shaped brooches and sparkly pink tutus – ready to take on the city. 💖
Today, I'm diving into the world of February 8th, 1949. Now, the ballet scene back then was all about classical ballets, and let me tell you, the tutus were something else! Imagine flowing, diaphanous layers of tulle, designed to create the illusion of graceful movement and, well, to float effortlessly like a cloud in a big, romantic ballroom scene!
I think back to those gorgeous tutus and, well, they were so elegant, just like the dancers themselves. You know how some of the greatest ballerinas, like Margot Fonteyn and Alicia Markova, danced in these tutus? Dreamy! And remember, 1949 is only a year away from the groundbreaking creation of The Sleeping Beauty in New York, where you saw a glorious revival of Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet, starring the incredible ballerina, Maria Tallchief! You know, you can't mention "tutuland" in 1949 without saying a big hello to "The Sleeping Beauty"! Swirling, romantic and magnificent! 🩰💖
Talking of New York City in 1949 – just last week I had a dream day. I caught a matinee performance of La Bayadere at the New York City Ballet. Such exquisite artistry, such beautifully crafted, romantic movements – ahh it really transported me. 🩰✨
The most delicious surprise, though? The city itself is buzzing with excitement! A real-life fairytale come true – New York is just overflowing with hearts, all set for Valentine’s Day – I’ve been on such a shopping spree. Imagine delicate pink silk scarfs, velvet brooches and the cutest floral bonnets. 👒🛍️ Just the thing to add that extra something-special to my Valentine’s Day date look – because a little sprinkle of pink sparkle always makes a day more romantic. 🥰✨
Speaking of special events… it was on this very date in 1949, the grand opening of the Museum of Modern Art's New Sculpture Garden in New York! This iconic art haven was the setting for some of the most incredible contemporary sculpture exhibitions. Think of Henry Moore’s monumental sculptures. Stunning, right? They even commissioned Alexander Calder to design a Mobile - the very first Calder in New York! I can't imagine how fascinating those artworks must have been for the artists and patrons who experienced them back then. ✨🖼️
The world of 1949 felt so exciting and new – and don't even get me started on the food scene! We’re talking elegant New York restaurants, bustling bakeries serving the most delicious pastries (a tiny little croissant to celebrate my #TutuTuesday adventures? Maybe!), and… the best cup of tea I’ve had in all my travels (I am a Derbyshire girl, after all, and tea time is a thing! ) ☕️🍰
I’ve been so lucky to experience a taste of the past, but remember – my time travelling adventures need funding! That’s where my ballet performances come in – the joy of sharing my love of dance with the world, while seeing the breathtaking beauty of tutus in action! It really fuels my wanderlust. I'm currently on my way back to Derbyshire via train! Such luxurious travel back then! Think mahogany panelling, big, plush seats and beautiful window views! 🚂 ✨
So, that's my little peek into the glamorous world of ballet in 1949! Have you ever wished you could hop on a train and journey through time? Which era of tutu history would you love to experience? Don’t forget to let me know in the comments below! ✨
And remember, lovelies, always wear your pink tutu with pride!
Until next week,
Emma
