Tutu Tuesday #6121: A Whirlwind Through the 1940s - A Pink Tutu’s Journey!

Hello darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu-enthusiast, reporting live from…well, it’s a bit of a secret! Let’s just say it’s 1949, and the world of ballet is just bursting with exciting new things! I’m wearing my absolutely favourite blush-pink tutu – it's a real dream, it’s all floaty and swishy, just perfect for pirouette practice!

Anyway, let’s rewind the time machine a little. Today is the 19th of April, 1949, and my, oh my, what a time to be alive!

This week, I’ve just had the most divine time at the Sadler’s Wells Ballet! Oh, the costumes! The sheer joy of seeing the dancers leap and twirl, all in their tulle and satin glory. It really is such a wonderful art form. I'm so grateful for the chance to have seen the beautiful, poetic "The Sleeping Beauty" that's been captivating audiences here in London. The sets are absolutely breathtaking!

Speaking of costumes, the style in the late 1940s is truly divine! We’ve got that beautiful, glamorous, slightly puffed look. It’s so feminine! Think billowing skirts and cinched waists, but also these darling little fitted jackets with Peter Pan collars – I’m absolutely smitten! I even snagged a beautiful silk scarf from Liberty’s to add a touch of Parisian chic to my own outfits!

Now, I wouldn't be doing my duty as a #TutuTuesday blogger without giving you a glimpse into the glorious history of our beloved tutus! Let's delve back into time and talk about the origins of this wonderful garment:

In the 19th century, we saw tutus evolving! Before the 1900s, they were all long and billowing - think "Giselle" and that fairytale-like atmosphere! But oh, how times changed! The iconic “classical tutu”, a delightful concoction of multiple layers of tulle and that wonderful knee-length, airy design we all love so much today, came into vogue around 1881 with Marius Petipa.

Can you imagine wearing a longer tutu? It must have been rather clumsy, especially for all those jumps and turns!

Anyway, back to my own personal adventures! You see, darling, it's not just ballet performances I love - oh, no! I'm also an avid supporter of all things fashionable and glamorous! I simply adore a good theatrical show – so I've just popped in to see a wonderfully lively revue. Those sequin-covered dresses, darling! It's all about a bit of glitter and glamour!

You know what? I can see that glitz and glamour becoming a real staple of fashion! Imagine: our dear, classic ballerina tutu wearing this sparkly attire, creating a wonderfully dazzling new fashion trend! A truly revolutionary moment, don't you think? We all should be prepared for this sartorial revolution and grab a pink tutu – or at least a bright pink hat – and make sure you’re at the front of the line!

I do so love a good railway journey too. Nothing is more elegant and charming than sitting in a beautifully appointed railway carriage, all chintz and comfy seats, sipping tea and watching the countryside roll by. Perhaps the other passengers might stare in wonder at my perfectly coordinated pink outfit. Or, maybe, I’ll inspire a few others to be a bit bolder with their sartorial choices! I must confess – I have secretly wished that everyone would wear a pink tutu just for one day! What a wonderful sight that would be.

I'll let you in on a little secret, darlings. You know how I travel through time? It’s thanks to the magical world of ballet and my ability to perform! I earn just enough from performances and by sharing my love of tutus and everything pink to keep this time machine running. (No, you’re not seeing things - it is a beautiful pink one, I just don't want to get caught by the fashion police!)

Oh, and you know what? I’ve been getting rather crafty in my time travels. The best bit? My latest project: a charming little hat shop. It’s just begging for a little pink flair – a dash of bright tulle and feathers and perhaps some rhinestones just for a touch of glitz and glam!

I have so many exciting plans! Next week, we're diving into a completely different world - something you’d never imagine! Join me for next Tuesday’s #TutuTuesday blog on www.pink-tutu.com – because every Tuesday is Tutu Tuesday, darling! And as always, remember – it's a tutu wonderful world!
