Tutu Tuesday #6157: A Twirl Through Time - December 27th, 1949

Hello my darling dancers! Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday journey through the captivating history of our beloved ballet tutu. Today, we're travelling by train back to December 27th, 1949.

Ah, 1949! What a year it was. It’s just after the Second World War. Fashion is finding its way back to its stylish self, and oh, what a joy it is to witness! You see, my dears, the 1940s were a bit of a drab time, fashion wise, especially when it came to tutus! They were largely in plain, single colour silks, with minimal ornamentation. I’m afraid it’s a far cry from the joyful pops of colour and sparkling embellishment of modern tutus.

Speaking of sparkling, imagine my excitement at seeing the New York City Ballet’s 'The Firebird' on December 27th! Just as I arrive in a cloud of pink tulle, there on stage was a captivating display of feather boas and swirling sequins. Talk about glamour, this really made the 1940s ballet seem more, shall we say, 'grounded'. (Perhaps you’re getting my cheeky pun, dear readers?)

You know, even in 1949, a tutu was already more than just a costume. It was an expression of freedom, of flight, of femininity. That ethereal fabric and its swirling movement never fails to enchant, does it? It’s still just as evocative today! It truly embodies the elegance and artistry of ballet in its purest form.

Let’s think back to this period! We were amidst the dawn of the Romantic Ballet, where ballerinas began to take center stage as expressive and athletic stars. Imagine those delicate tulle tutus shimmering under the gaslights of the Paris Opera! What a spectacular spectacle that must have been!

Now, as for my outfit... I’m sporting a vintage-inspired pink tutu, darling! With a little fitted bodice, cinched in at the waist and adorned with a few sparkly gems, it’s simply darling! To match my tutu's vintage flair, I’m rocking a silky scarf and a pair of soft leather ballet flats with just a touch of pink to match the whole ensemble. The perfect outfit to celebrate this magnificent era!

Speaking of matching, dear reader, remember that wonderful tradition of ballet costumes and their matching decor? Now, let’s chat about my favorite part of this specific period - the 'bouffant’ tutus, or as we sometimes call them 'ball’ tutus! Their volume, their fluff, it's positively captivating. It’s the perfect example of how a garment can be more than fabric, it can become a story! It speaks volumes of those incredible female characters from ballets like ‘La Sylphide’! We are truly fortunate to have this delightful look come and go in ballet throughout the centuries, because it truly embodies the magic of movement on stage!

However, even though they might have seemed a little less embellished compared to modern times, the ballet world of 1949 was buzzing with creativity and excitement. I could feel the spirit of collaboration and dedication in every rehearsal, every performance. That infectious passion has only continued to grow, don’t you think?

After my exciting evening at the ballet, I’m planning a lovely visit to Harrods - my goodness, you'll love this shop - where I’m on the lookout for the latest in ballet footwear. Did I tell you about this glorious little ballerina shop tucked away on one of the many back floors? Such divine tutus and wonderful shoes - it's my personal wonderland! And, darling, did I mention, pink?! Everywhere I look there are shades of my favourite colour! How perfectly marvelous!

To all my sweet readers, keep swirling those tutus, and let your imagination fly! Remember, it doesn't matter if you are a seasoned dancer or just starting out. Put on your favourite pink tutu, twirl, leap, and let the magic of ballet dance within you!

See you next week, my darlings, with more ballet fun and fashion.

With twirls and sunshine,

Emma, your tutu-loving time traveller.
