#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - January 31st, 1950
Hello, darlings! Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday post for you. You know how much I adore all things tutu – that twirling, twirling delight! It's hard to believe I'm already on post number 6162. Time flies when you're dancing with tutus, right?
This week, my time machine has landed me back in January 1950. Now, the 1950s were a very exciting time for ballet. It's when ballerinas like Margot Fonteyn were wowing audiences with their incredible performances, and designers were creating tutus that were both beautiful and functional. Just imagine those frothy, perfectly layered tutus catching the light – it’s enough to make your heart skip a beat, even a time-travelling one like mine!
The Changing World of Tutus
1950 was all about streamlined shapes and dramatic movement. Remember the "New Look" of Christian Dior? It had its influence on ballet costumes too. The days of the heavy, elaborate tutus were winding down. Think more fluidity, elegance, and grace – perfectly fitting the style of ballet of the day.
Speaking of the "New Look", if you’ve caught me on the platform in my signature pink tutu, I’ll have likely just disembarked from the glamorous Orient Express. What a way to travel! With a touch of the theatre in its carriages, and a journey through such magnificent landscapes, the Orient Express is a perfect symbol of glamour, elegance and grace, not dissimilar to the 1950s ballet movement. Don't you just love the way fashion influences every aspect of life?
This month is all about fashion, darlings. Imagine this: the scent of Chanel No. 5 hanging in the air at the Opera House, a perfectly tailored coat worn by a lady at a ballet, and elegant gentlemen in dinner jackets, admiring the performances of the ballerinas. Ah, the pure romance of it all!
And don't get me started on the shoes, my dears! Those perfectly pointed ballet slippers - the epitome of elegance. And while I'm obsessed with my trusty pair of pink tutus, those pointed shoes take a special place in my heart too!
*Where am I? *
The buzz is strong here in New York, and it's exciting to witness the impact of a performance by the legendary Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo! Such powerful choreography and masterful dancers. These performances draw a truly international crowd to witness the beauty of ballet, and their impact on the fashion world can't be ignored. It’s no wonder this city feels so alive and buzzing with energy! And when I can sneak in a bit of shopping between the ballet and the performance, I find my eyes drifting towards a certain shade of pink for the certain occasion….
Time Travel Tip
You know I can't reveal all my time travel secrets, but I can give you a little piece of advice! If you're visiting New York, be sure to catch a ballet performance! They truly transport you to another world, a world of magic, grace, and elegance. Trust me, it's worth every single penny, even if you need to borrow a few bob for a special treat, you won’t regret it!
A little bit of pink magic
Don’t forget to wear a touch of pink today, darling, it adds a bit of ballet sparkle to everything. It’s amazing what a simple pink accessory can do to brighten your day. A bit of lipstick, a cute bow, or even just a simple pink scarf... embrace the pink! After all, who can resist a little bit of pink magic?
Till next Tuesday, keep twirling!
