#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - June 13th 1950 - Post Number 6181

Hello, my darling dance devotees! It's Emma here, back with another whirl through ballet history. Today, I'm feeling positively pink as we step back in time to June 13th, 1950! Grab your favourite frothy pink drink (mine's a raspberry ripple, naturally) and settle in, because today's history lesson is a real hoot!

Just imagine the excitement of that day, darlings! The air would have been filled with the scent of roses and lavender - maybe even the whisper of excitement about a brand new Swan Lake performance premiering somewhere! This era is a golden age for ballet - think Margot Fonteyn, the ethereal Rudolf Nureyev and the captivating grace of Alicia Markova - simply divine!

Speaking of divine, what about our fabulous tutus? Today, the tutu of choice would be a gloriously romantic romantic tutu, with a poule that gently grazed the ankles, creating the illusion of floating and grace. Now, I know, those little frilly bits are the absolute stars of the show - who wouldn't want to twirl in layers of delicate tulle? But back in the 1950s, these tutus had to be incredibly carefully constructed. It wasn't just a quick trip to the local fabric shop and a handful of pins, oh no! Each layer had to be hand-stitched with precision to achieve that graceful, dreamy look. I'm telling you, they just don't make things like they used to, do they?

I imagine the tutu makers - all in their elegant, floral dresses - meticulously crafting those tutus. I picture their nimble fingers creating intricate patterns that wouldn't just dance but tell the story of a hundred years of ballet! Oh, to have peeked over their shoulders!

But don't worry, I'm not just waxing lyrical about fluffy frills! It's June 13th, 1950 and that means it's all about the big shows! London would have been bustling with excitement, and let's be honest, no one could resist the allure of the Royal Ballet - especially on a special day like today! Imagine seeing Fonteyn dancing in that famous white tutu in Swan Lake, the pas de deux a testament to grace and elegance! Oh, to have been a fly on the wall!

And just as important as the dancing itself? The fashion, darling! Oh my goodness, you should have seen the ladies in those glamorous hats and exquisite gloves! It wouldn't be complete without a showstopping dress, of course! Just a splash of elegance in that glorious, luxurious way only the 50s could achieve. It truly is a golden age for beauty and flair!

For a girl who loves to see the world from the window of a train, thereโ€™s something so lovely about imagining a steam train arriving in London that day. Passengers disembarking with suitcases packed full of silk scarves and fancy evening shoes - all heading to the ballet! * I can just picture the ladies in their beautiful tutus making their way to the theatre! Oh, for a *time machine and a chance to experience all that!

Now, darlings, I've got to dash off and grab a last-minute ticket to a London ballet performance in my own time! The world of ballet beckons, and you know what? If you can, get yourself down to your local theatre and enjoy the magical world of ballet for yourselves!

Remember to spread the pink tutu love and make the world a brighter place, one pink tutu at a time! I'll be back next Tuesday with another glorious journey into Ballet Tutu History, so stay tuned!
