#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1950-08-01: The Tutu Takes Centre Stage

Post 6188 - www.pink-tutu.com - Emma, your tutu travel guide!

Hello my gorgeous tutu-loving darlings!

It’s me, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back with another #TutuTuesday blog post and today we’re venturing back to the summer of 1950!

Ooh la la! The 50s were all about that elegant, feminine glamour – think flowing skirts, nipped waists, and of course, tutus! Can you imagine it, dear readers, being a ballerina in that era? Imagine yourself with the most divine tutu gracing your limbs, twirling on a grand stage in front of a roaring audience! Just heavenly!

So buckle up, lovelies, and let’s embark on a trip down memory lane! I’ve just hopped off the train in New York City, which was simply teeming with fabulous fashion – from elegant suits for the boys to the most darling cocktail dresses! The ladies, bless their cotton socks, were embracing the romantic era, with flowing skirts, big hair, and yes you guessed it, oh so chic tutus!

This particular date, 1st August 1950, was just bubbling with excitement! It was a Tuesday, so obviously the day for tutus, and this particular one just happened to coincide with the opening night of the *American Ballet Theatre production of The Sleeping Beauty! Talk about a twirly Tuesday! Can you imagine?! Just think, darling, if we could jump in a time machine and travel back, we could see some of the most elegant ballerinas of all time on that stage! Talk about ballet magic!

Let’s dive into this particular time period! The tutus in the 50s were oh so romantic. It was the dawn of a new era for ballet, with ballerinas becoming superstars! They wore long tutus – you know, those gorgeous designs with layers and layers of soft, flowing tulle? They just ooze romance! Imagine your own tutu, this length flowing as you dance, just breathtaking! The colours, darling? Pure perfection, oh yes, they were just bursting with colour! Think shimmering pink, celestial blues, even those daring, vibrant reds – a real treat for the eyes! It was truly the time of the tutu in all its glory.

In those days, tutus were not just about performance; they were part of the very fabric of society! Just picture this scene, lovelies: the girls of that era gliding about in their stunning gowns, with perhaps just a touch of ballerina grace and elegance. That was their everyday style! They truly understood that ballet elegance, you know?

Of course, you’ll understand why I’m obsessed with 1950s tutus! They are simply exquisite.

Speaking of 50s style, what could be more elegant than pink tutus? Just the colour of love, don’t you think? They bring to mind an utterly feminine, romantic charm, perfect for this time of ballet elegance. Imagine walking down a busy New York street, eyes twinkling with that magical pink tutus sparkle, attracting looks of delight and perhaps just a few jealous glares from those who have never danced with such abandon.

Don't get me wrong, it’s all about those ballet shoes, dear readers! Don’t ever think for a moment that tutus can ever be fully embraced without them. Imagine that first step onto the stage - that's where the true ballet magic begins - just think of those gorgeous pink satin slippers, worn in perfect ballet class posture with a dainty pointe shoes grace. That’s true tutu bliss, my loves, just utter pure perfection!

I love this era – they even used to call them "tutucutes" – so utterly glamorous! Just picture yourself walking down Fifth Avenue with your pink tulle billowing so beautifully behind you! Now, darling, I know you are absolutely ready to get out there and embrace the ballerina magic of 1950, right? Embrace the twirls!

I've been exploring NYC's most fabulous fashion stores and let me tell you, this town truly adores tutus, but I’m going to tell you a secret... If you want to discover truly magical vintage tutus, my loves, you must journey to London. Don’t get me wrong, New York has its charms - it is totally fab - but London... well, that’s the real capital of ballet! Just like that city’s history, its ballet heritage truly stretches back centuries, making its vintage offerings a treasure trove of tutu history.

As a true tutu-loving travel guide, I'd be remiss not to mention that, of course, the very birthplace of the ballet is Paris. Now there is no place on the globe with more historical tutus, even dating back to the early stages of ballet, and so much inspiration for fashion design - so get your boots on, grab your very favourite pink tutu, and head on over! My travels to the very heart of the ballerina world is most definitely next on the agenda and I will share all the ballet magic with you, dear readers, for sure. I just know the streets of Paris will have so much more magic to share with you, gorgeousness beyond words.

Remember to come back to pink-tutu.com next week, loves, as I venture back to a another era of history, all in the name of ballet tutus. The love affair never ends, I say, and there is so much more to discover. Don’t you dare miss a moment of it!
