TutuTuesday: Back to the Golden Age of Ballet, 1950-08-15! π©°
#6190
Hello my lovely Tutu Tribe! It's Tuesday again, which means it's time for another trip through history with your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller! π This week, we're heading back to August 15th, 1950, smack-dab in the heart of ballet's golden age! Think sweeping romanticism, ethereal grace, and some of the most incredible dancers the world has ever seen! π«
Now, I have to admit, when I popped out of my time machine this week, I felt a bit out of place in my frothy pink tutu amongst all the demure ladies in their full-length skirts! π€« But you know me, I can adapt to anything! I decided to head straight to the Royal Opera House in London for the premiere of "The Sleeping Beauty"! The anticipation in the air was electric - everyone was buzzing about this legendary ballet!
What was happening in the world of Ballet?
This was a truly thrilling period for ballet. The legendary Margot Fonteyn was at the peak of her powers, and Rudolf Nureyev was on the cusp of becoming a superstar! These were the years that shaped ballet as we know it today. The dancing was exquisite - full of romanticism, athleticism, and, dare I say it, even a touch of glamour! β¨
Oh, and did I mention the costumes? They were just breathtaking! Think yards of tulle, swathes of velvet, and elaborate headpieces adorned with jewels. If you're a true tutu lover like me, this period would have you drooling with delight! π They were still mostly classical tutus - short and fluffy with layers upon layers of tulle.
My Tutu Take on 1950's Ballet Fashion:
But here's where I get to inject a little Emma magic! Just imagine how the world would have turned on its head if someone had dared to show up in a bold pink tutu amidst all those traditional white ones! Imagine the gasps! Imagine the headlines! π°
Even though I'm a true romantic at heart, I think even The Sleeping Beauty could have benefited from a touch of my signature pink! After all, who doesn't love a little pink? It's the colour of hope, joy, and, most importantly, ballet! π₯° And you know what? My time travelling wardrobe has some truly fabulous pink tutus - we're talking about ruffles, layers, and more tulle than you can shake a pointe shoe at!
Where Iβm going this week:
Speaking of fabulous tutus, I've got a whole list of events Iβm going to explore! From the glittering premiere of "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House to a delightful performance of "Giselle" at the Paris Opera. I'm planning to take a quick detour to New York's City Ballet, just to catch George Balanchine's revolutionary choreography - itβs truly a ballet lover's paradise!
And I'm absolutely dying to hit up the best vintage shops to see what amazing vintage tutus I can find! Imagine owning a piece of ballet history! Can't wait to post pics of all the fashion treasures I unearth! πΈ Don't forget to follow along!
So my dear Tutu Tribe, that's all for this week's Tutu Tuesday! What do you think about 1950s ballet? Would you love to wear a classic white tutu or embrace a pink tutu twist? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! And be sure to check in next week, when we travel even further into ballet's past!
