#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 6209: 1950s Chic! 🩰✨

Hiya lovely lot! It's your favourite tutu-clad time traveller Emma, back again with another #TutuTuesday post! Today, we're heading back to the shimmering, glamorous world of the 1950s – a time of post-war prosperity, breathtaking couture, and… you guessed it… TUTUS!

But before we step back in time, let me tell you a little secret. It’s 26th December today - Boxing Day! Can you believe it? Who doesn't love a little post-Christmas gift giving? It makes my inner child giggle! Anyway, I've been touring a new ballet production in New York this week, “Swan Lake”, with a performance earlier this evening – absolutely stunning! And what’s even better is I managed to snag a pair of fabulously vintage heels for my new vintage-style wardrobe.

Now, let’s journey back to the 1950s, and a world where tutus took centre stage!

Tutus: A Style Sensation!

Forget that drab old '50s fashion you think about. The era of “New Look” designed by Christian Dior brought about an explosion of gorgeous femininity and an emphasis on flowing, whimsical skirts and perfectly sculpted silhouettes. What a treat for the eyes!

Naturally, this fabulous aesthetic translated beautifully into the world of ballet, creating an era where tutus truly reigned supreme.

Imagine the grandeur – the delicate tulle cascading down like spun sugar, the sheer lightness that allowed the dancers to soar across the stage with such grace. Just like me!

More Than Just A Costume!

You know what's exciting? During this time, tutus became a fashion statement beyond the stage. Inspired by the ballerina, women all over the world began wearing tutus for everyday wear – think party dresses, dance class attire – even the ladies of high society were getting in on the act. I think they would’ve adored my blog!

The Story of the "Classic Tutu"

The 1950s marked a period of evolution for the tutu, moving away from the more layered, heavier styles of the 1930s and 40s. It became much more streamlined, with a more form-fitting silhouette, emphasizing the lines of the body and the fluid movements of the dancers. I even wear my “Classic Tutu” from this time on some evenings for extra fabulousness, with its elegant simplicity.

This design was further enhanced by Rudolf Nureyev, a revolutionary force in the ballet world, who embraced the “classic” tutu as a symbol of elegance, precision, and refined movement. Think graceful swan dips and soaring leaps. I bet it looks fabulous on you, darling.

The Stars Align

One of the biggest reasons for this tutus craze, was Margot Fonteyn. You must all have heard of this glorious legend! Her talent was incredible, and her graceful movement made the tutu a captivating and visually captivating element on stage, which she did on the same night that we watched Swan Lake - what a coincidence. She is a true inspiration!

Time Travel Tutus:

What do you think about the tutus from this era? The designs have certainly evolved, but one thing that hasn't changed? Tutus remain the epitome of feminine beauty and graceful artistry, a timeless piece that always captures the imagination. I bet they would love the styles today – tutus have always come back in a new iteration for each generation.

And the journey continues. You see, as a time-traveling tutu enthusiast, I'm lucky enough to get to explore different eras and watch tutus evolve – it's like an adventure every day. But that is how I can afford my adventures! When not time traveling I dance for the ballet, perform in theatres and even work in the street for buskers!
