#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 23rd January 1951 (Blog Post #6213)

Hello, darlings! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com for another thrilling trip through ballet tutu history! It's a glorious Tuesday, and you know what that means – it's time for #TutuTuesday! Today, we're swirling back to January 23rd, 1951, a day brimming with both glamour and grace. Grab a cuppa, slip into your favourite tutu (a pink one, of course!), and let's get ready to twirl through time!

A Blast from the Past: 1951!

Imagine, darlings, a world without mobile phones, internet, and endless scrolling through Instagram (a very scary thought indeed)! Back in 1951, people lived life a bit slower, focused on face-to-face conversations, and real-life connections. But just like today, they craved entertainment and artistry.

1951 was an exciting year for the ballet world! It was the year that the Royal Ballet (originally the Sadler's Wells Ballet) had its first season at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden! It was quite the momentous occasion! Now, let me tell you, darlings, Covent Garden has always been a hotbed for all things elegant and fashionable! The atmosphere is simply divine!

The theatre itself was undergoing renovations, but the excitement for this grand new era was tangible. Think luxurious red velvet seats, chandelier lights twinkling, and the sound of applause filling the air - just like a dream come true, really! It's no wonder, darlings, that people flocked to these grand performances, eager to see the very best of the ballet world.

What's Going on in Ballet?

Well, this is when a legendary ballet first appeared on the scene – "The Sleeping Beauty." Can you believe it? 1951! It's simply captivating! A tale of romance, adventure, and magic that weaves together the very best of ballet choreography. It was the first time Margot Fonteyn, who, let's just say, was the absolute superstar of her time, appeared in the role of Aurora. She had quite the career trajectory, appearing in various ballets throughout the decade and gracing us with her effortless elegance. And we can’t forget the amazing Frederick Ashton, another legendary choreographer of his era! This ballet showcased the pure grace of the female form and the athleticism of the male dancers, a timeless pairing that has enthralled audiences for generations.

You see, darlings, this era was about tradition, grandeur, and the celebration of artistry. Ballet was becoming even more recognized as an art form, much like painting or music!

Tutu Trends and Fashion

Speaking of glamour, oh darlings, the tutu designs were just phenomenal in 1951! You'd see delicate layers of tulle, beautifully sewn and finished with impeccable precision. Those designs! So meticulously crafted! This was the time when the tutu evolved, getting shorter and incorporating more embellishments, just like our iconic modern day tutus! I am rather fond of this era’s design sensibilities, as you might imagine!

Oh, and can you imagine, darlings, having to get ready for the opera in just an hour? Imagine what kind of hurry they were in, all ready to get out to a fancy party or just to watch the latest performance in the Covent Garden theatres! Think elegant hats, lovely gloves, glamorous jewels – fashion at its finest! It really was a glamorous era!

And Now for My Travels…

Now, I couldn’t possibly talk about 1951 without mentioning the train, darlings! Trains were the way to travel. Imagine travelling to Covent Garden in a vintage, charming railway carriage, wearing your absolute best outfit! Think a vintage travelling suit and of course, my very favorite shade - PINK! Yes, you guessed right, a pink beret and matching handbag to make a statement!

My Own Personal Touches for Tutu Tuesday

For this #TutuTuesday, I've chosen my absolute favourite pink tulle tutu with intricate embroidery around the bodice. To honour the style of the day, I’m wearing a little vintage velvet jacket with an intricate flower broach! It’s going to be a smashing look!

And let's not forget the makeup, darlings! A subtle pink lipstick and a little eyeliner is all you need for a flawless, feminine look! But be sure to not go overboard! It's all about elegant simplicity.

Oh, and before I forget, remember to check out my new Instagram page, @ThePinkTutu where I’m sharing all my adventures in fashion, ballet, and of course, my very favourite tutu!

Until next week, my darlings! Don’t forget to spread the love for pink tutus!
