#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History – 10th July, 1951

Hello my dearest Tutu Twirlers!

Welcome back to #TutuTuesday! Today, we’re taking a grand jeté back to the 10th of July, 1951. My pink tulle and I have just arrived in the beautiful city of New York, a real haven for all things theatrical! It's always a delight to travel by train, seeing the changing landscapes whizz past the window – so very much more romantic than those stuffy aeroplanes! I just adore the vintage glamour of those old-fashioned carriages, it’s simply the best way to arrive in style.

I'm so excited, because on this very day, the New York City Ballet took the stage at the City Center for the very first time. You simply wouldn’t believe the excitement!

A New York Ballet Begins

You see, back in 1948, two famous ballet pioneers, Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine, came together to start this extraordinary dance company. They wanted to create something completely new – a ballet company dedicated to contemporary dance and a place for amazing dancers to truly shine! The very first performance was Symphony in C – can you imagine? So exciting! It’s truly a privilege to witness history like this, a real glimpse into the past that still has a vibrant influence on today's ballet world.

Let’s talk tutus – a brief history lesson

Oh, tutus! My heart truly beats for them. You simply can’t talk about ballet without discussing their exquisite beauty, the way they dance with the dancer, how they become an extension of their artistry. It all began in the early 19th century, believe it or not, when Marie Taglioni took to the stage in the groundbreaking La Sylphide.

Marie, with her airy steps and enchanting movements, sparked a revolution in ballet. Imagine, all the ballerinas before her wore these restrictive, floor-length skirts – not exactly practical for showing off a pirouette, don't you think?

La Sylphide transformed ballet – a symbol of romanticism, delicate, flowing lines, and, of course, the debut of the tutu, a shorter, tiered skirt that allowed for the graceful movements and steps of ballet. What a delightful and essential evolution!

A Ballet Inspired Journey

Now, 1951 may have marked a significant turning point in the story of the New York City Ballet, but believe me, history and ballet have continued to evolve ever since.

These incredible journeys of exploration are exactly why I, your favourite pink-tutu clad time-traveller, am constantly hopping between different eras and venues. I simply have to experience the history firsthand – how else would I be able to truly understand how the tutu has evolved? My travel adventures are, of course, funded by performing at various shows, both on stage and on the streets – how else can a tutu-obsessed ballerina fuel her time travelling passion?

Ballet Street Fashion

Speaking of the streets, darling! We’ve already seen how the ballet tutu influenced fashion way back in the 19th century, and guess what? It hasn't stopped there! Every decade seems to draw inspiration from its elegance. Just imagine - those iconic ballerinas, gracefully pirouetting, and inspiring the latest trends. That’s a powerful message for a dress, don’t you think?

So many of you have asked me, “How can I get a glimpse of the tutu's influence in fashion today?” You simply must follow fashion trends! Think ballet shoes in all sorts of fun colours, light and delicate fabrics like tulle and silk, flowing skirts and all those whimsical details. And let’s not forget that classic tutu shape – you’ll spot it in dresses, skirts, and even jackets, transforming any outfit from ordinary to exquisite.

Where can we get a taste of ballet today?

And let’s not forget the joy of ballet performance! Today, it's a delight to see just how far ballet has come since 1951. From classic productions in theatres to more modern and street-inspired styles, there's something for everyone.

My travels this week will take me to London's Covent Garden, to witness the magnificent work of the Royal Ballet. Such incredible dancers, their talent, and the energy of the performances - truly breathtaking! This coming weekend, I'm taking a short hop over to Paris – just to watch a show at the famous Palais Garnier and check out the latest trends! It's just the best excuse for a little shopping spree, don't you think? And of course, I'll be sure to pick up a new pink tutu while I’m there – the Parisian boutiques are simply exquisite!

So, darling Tutu Twirlers, I’ll be heading back to the present soon. Don't forget to tune in next Tuesday for another adventure in ballet history, and be sure to send me your questions. If you've got a burning ballet query or want to share your tutu fashion adventures, do tell!

Until next week, may your steps be graceful and your twirls delightful!

Love, Emma
