#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 28th August 1951

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, time-traveling blogger, and welcome to #TutuTuesday - post number 6244 on www.pink-tutu.com! As always, we're twirling through history today, taking a peek at the world of ballet tutus in the past. This week, we're setting our time machine to August 28th, 1951.

Fancy a ride with me? Oh, you simply must bring your pink tutu, it’s essential attire for our journey. And grab a little notebook and pencil to scribble down all the fashionable bits!

From the Heart of London: Ballet in 1951

Picture this: It’s 1951 and the summer is winding down. The Festival of Britain is in full swing, London is buzzing, and there's a delicious air of hope in the city. Just like today, the people are delighted by the beautiful fashion that’s gracing the streets, all thanks to those talented Parisian designers who seem to always be one step ahead of the game!

The ballet world is just as thrilling! The Royal Ballet has returned to Covent Garden after its stint in Sadler’s Wells, and those divine dancers are gracing the stage in tutus that are simply breathtaking. There’s an air of elegance and grace to everything; think simple lines and perfectly controlled movement - truly a sight to behold!

A Little Trip Back to Paris: Tutues and Style Inspiration

My darling, a proper Parisian fashionista is never just a fashionista, she’s a collector of inspiration. Just the other day, I found myself on a glorious Parisian shopping trip, just so I could see for myself what the ladies were wearing for this coming autumn. I'll be posting about this soon - it was quite the trip, and believe me, there was a wealth of inspiration!

From that lovely journey, I was so excited to see how French influence, always a force in fashion, was starting to infiltrate the world of ballet costumes. Imagine the purest white tutu, made with delicate layers of tulle that look so soft they melt into a gentle cloud! But the key here is the lines. This is the beginning of a subtle shift from the rigid shapes and the traditional white to something more… romantic. There's a delicate sense of flowing lines, with skirts and bodice shaping the form in such a lovely, flattering way. I’ve been inspired! Just wait until you see my new tutus… sighs.

Tutus & Fashion: The World of 1951

It’s a golden age for ballet in London! Our darling dancers are taking inspiration from Parisian fashion, embracing this modern approach to ballet wear. Their elegant styles – that perfect balance of practicality and femininity – are setting the trend.

Let’s get our feet back to the ground for a moment! Out on the streets, you'll see the classic New Look in action! Think flowing skirts, nipped-in waists, and a touch of that Parisian charm – but all made in vibrant, gorgeous fabrics and bold colours. But I just love the subtle nod towards the world of ballet: there’s something wonderfully ballet-inspired about all that floating fabric, almost as if everyone’s waiting to twirl on stage!

The colour palette? Pink, my dearest friends! In all shades – from pale and powdery to vibrant and blushing. We have the iconic pink ballerina shoes of course!

But honestly, I love the trend that everyone is taking it further - that gorgeous colour is starting to pop up everywhere in the 1951 world. Even everyday clothing is showing the pink power, from cardigans and skirts to little silk blouses and, of course, our iconic pink tutus!

A Look to the Future

It's exciting to think about where this all leads. We’re in the midst of a fashion shift! Imagine, the tutus, so perfectly fitting the female form and full of elegant movement, could very well influence future styles – even those of our little girl ballerinas, perhaps?

The ballet world has a power – to captivate our imaginations and transport us into a magical world. A world full of stories, passion, and elegance. Just like that beautiful Parisian style – something timeless, sophisticated, and chic - it all started somewhere…and this time, it’s starting in 1951.

Until next week, my dearest darlings. Be sure to visit www.pink-tutu.com and catch our latest adventures in style!

Remember, life's too short to wear anything less than a pink tutu. Happy Twirling!

P.S. I just learned about a beautiful ballet based on Shakespeare’s "As You Like It." Now, who wouldn’t be excited about seeing the forest of Arden on stage, especially when they’re dressed in those perfectly soft pink tutus?

P.P.S My next adventure will take me to the Royal Opera House, and just you wait until I see what my Parisian inspired tutu does when it hits the stage! Let me know what you would like to see during our future adventures on my www.pink-tutu.com website!

Always with love,
Emma
