#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1952-02-19!

Bonjour, my lovely tutu-lovers!

Welcome to post number 6269 on your favourite pink-tutu-tastic blog, www.pink-tutu.com, and this week's #TutuTuesday adventure! It's me, Emma, your tutu-clad time-traveling fashionista, back from another trip to the past! This time, I landed in 1952! I can already tell this is going to be a fabulous journey – you just wait till you hear about the dress designs!

But first, we gotta chat tutus! Now, 1952 wasn’t quite the peak of the tutu era, that was still a few decades off, but we were definitely witnessing a transition period. Ballet companies around the globe were moving away from the bulky romantic tutus of yore and starting to explore more lightweight, shorter styles.

This shift was all thanks to the choreographer and the modernist ballet revolution. Those groundbreaking choreographers were demanding a different look, something more agile and expressive. Can you imagine trying to do a fouetté with those heavy layers of tulle? Honestly!

1952's style? Think short, graceful tutus, often made with lightweight tulle and emphasizing lines and movement. Picture ballerinas soaring across the stage in tutus that floated with them, almost a second skin. I even found some fantastic photos of dancers wearing tutus so short they were basically skirts! Isn’t that fabulous? You wouldn’t find me wearing a short tutu, not on your nelly! But for ballet it made sense. They were starting to become streetwear too, a trend I love! And don't even get me started on the stunning colors. You wouldn't believe the vibrant hues!

Now, I just HAVE to tell you about my latest shopping find! It was a glorious pink silk dress! I felt like a princess, honestly, with its delicate lace and shimmering sequins. I bought it at this fantastic little boutique on 5th Avenue, called “Bonwit Teller”. Imagine a tutu-shaped pink palace of clothes! Oh my word!

The day I arrived was February 19th, 1952, and while the ballet world wasn’t exactly on fire with groundbreaking performances, it was the start of something amazing. This was a period of change, where dancers were pushing boundaries and exploring new ways to move.

Speaking of movement, did I tell you about my ride to this historical trip? It was a train, of course, one of those beautiful crimson and silver express trains, complete with plush velvet seats. I had to sit in first-class; I'm nothing if not elegant. The views of the countryside whizzing by? Well, that's another story for a later post!

Oh! I had forgotten! Remember how we spoke about ballet moving beyond the stage? Well, the year 1952 saw a groundbreaking television ballet production, and a big Hollywood film was in production with a renowned ballet star! Imagine a world where the most exciting form of dance is televised across nations and the whole world is obsessed with a famous ballerina's film? So wonderful!

And you know what else? A huge international dance festival took place just before my arrival in 1952! A gathering of the world’s most renowned dancers, gorgeous tutus galore, just imagine all the fantastic pink ones I got to see!

I had to buy pink shoes to match my dress! Just imagine how spectacular they looked with my beautiful tutu.

I'll be back next week with even more tutu tales from the past! Until then, remember – embrace the pink! Embrace the tutu! And, most importantly, embrace your inner ballerina!

*Bisous,
Emma *
