#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through History, Post #6271 - March 4th, 1952

Oh my darlings! Happy #TutuTuesday! This week, our little time machine is whisking us back to the year 1952, just before the Queen’s Coronation! How utterly thrilling! The air crackles with excitement in the heart of London. Everywhere you look, everyone is abuzz with news of this historic event and, my dears, that's got everyone talking fashion!

Imagine, if you will, a city of elegant ladies in pastel hats and fur coats, strolling past handsome gentlemen in sharp suits. But the real excitement lies in the theaters. It’s the golden age of ballet, my dears, and the costumes are positively divine! Imagine: swirling skirts, elegant lines, and of course, oh the tutus! I’m simply swooning.

As a little pink tutu-loving lady from Derbyshire, travelling back in time has given me a truly grand insight into the history of our beloved tutu!

Now, let’s delve into the fascinating facts of the day, shall we?

The Dance World: A Symphony of Silk and Dreams

It's 1952, and London’s ballet scene is practically exploding! This year was the grand re-opening of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, following a wartime closure. A truly glorious affair! Can you just picture it? The majestic building, glittering with chandeliers, the applause rippling through the elegant audience, and the grace of the ballerinas shimmering like fireflies in their beautiful costumes! Oh, how I wish I could be a fly on the wall for this evening!

I imagine tutus as exquisitely-crafted wisps of tulle and silk, painted in hues of powder blue and soft pink – a dreamy, ethereal vision of dance! The delicate ballet shoes, designed for maximum flexibility, are surely just as exquisite as the graceful dancers’ steps themselves.

A Whiff of Fashion: The Rise of the Skirt

Let’s take a look at fashion beyond the stage! You wouldn’t be surprised to find that fashion trends are closely tied to what's happening in ballet. As always, there is a grand love of frills and frippery - what lady could resist a perfectly full skirt or a playful puff sleeve?

The 'New Look' introduced by Christian Dior is all the rage, with cinched waists and flowing skirts that evoke the graceful movements of the ballet! And with this beautiful feminine shape, how could one possibly resist pairing it with a pink tutu?

Even the iconic "Jackie O" - Jackie Kennedy - she loves to play dress-up, embracing her love of fashion in all things from high-society galas to shopping for children’s clothing. And she just loves a swirling tulle skirt!

Oh my dear readers! Don’t let your dreams of twirling and twirling in delightful colours of pink, lilac and all shades of magical pink go unfulfilled! Just picture yourself twirling! Now you know what I'm talking about!

Fashion Inspiration

This #TutuTuesday is inspiring! So what can we learn from all of this for today’s modern fashionistas? Let's just say, the fashion icons of 1952 clearly embraced the grace and beauty of ballet and, in a time where there was very little else on offer, their love of tutus took hold! If you need an excuse for a playful addition to your outfit – look no further! Remember, just as a splash of colour brightens the world, a little twirling of tulle is a surefire way to lift the spirits!

This is our call to action this #TutuTuesday - let your inner ballerina blossom, let your creativity flow, let's see a whole street of people twirling their days away, all while proudly sporting a pink tutu, and let us, my dear reader, be the inspiration! I will always support a bit of tutu magic! Let's go, let's dance, and remember, my dears, always wear pink! And never forget, as much as I love tutus, you don't have to twirl a whole tutu to look pretty in pink - try a fluffy skirt, or even a little pink ribbon in your hair! Remember, there is always room in our lives to be a bit of fun and frivolity!

My #TutuTuesday Travel Diary - Destination London!

My dears, I was truly enthralled to finally visit the Royal Opera House this week - such an opulent and exciting journey through time. Let’s talk travel. The train ride from Derbyshire to London, just in time to catch a ballet performance – there’s simply no other mode of transportation to inspire so much creativity and fashion inspiration! What could be more glorious?

There I was, all my bags packed, and in a perfect little pink tutu. I imagine my fellow travellers must have been truly bewildered as I twirled my way through the carriages in the most elegant ballet style. Let's just say, I do love a grand entrance and a train journey is certainly a grand one! The whistle blows, we’re off - and just like that - I'm whisked off on another of my adventures to my favourite city in the world, where I’m off on the most delightful shopping sprees, where I catch ballets - and of course I am sure to be making the grandest notes in my #TutuTuesday blog for next week’s blog!

This blog is my happy place - all of us are united through our love of tutus! We are, if you will, the grandest sisters from all across the globe, united by our love for a good spin and a splash of colour, all united in our desire for joy and fashion! Isn’t that a fantastic reason for travel and exploration, I ask you?! So my dears, twirl those dreams - and embrace all things pink!

This is Emma, signing out! And until next week, be sure to join me and celebrate everything pink! See you next #TutuTuesday!
