TutuTuesday: #6302 - The Fabulous Fifties!
Hiya lovelies!
It’s Emma here, your Pink Tutu Princess, and welcome back to another #TutuTuesday! This week, I'm whisking you back in time to a fabulously glamorous era – the 1950s! Buckle up, darlings, as we journey back to October 7th, 1952, and delve into the world of tutus as they were worn during this period of style and elegance.
Remember those glorious technicolour musicals? That's what tutus were all about! A splash of colour, a burst of happiness, and just the right amount of twirls to bring a smile to everyone's faces.
Imagine yourself in a tea room on the Champs-Élysées, a crisp Parisian afternoon, with a pot of tea steaming beside a delicious slice of gâteau. As you raise your pinky finger to sip your tea, your gaze falls upon a beautiful dancer twirling past the window. She's in a flowing, ethereal pink tulle tutu, so full of life, it almost appears to shimmer with the sunlight. You just have to smile! This is the joy of the ballet world in the 1950s!
And did you know, dear readers, that 1952 saw a remarkable ballet debut? Yes, the exquisite "Cinderella" by Frederick Ashton made its triumphant premiere in London's Royal Opera House! You could imagine those enchanting sets, those colourful costumes, and that sheer fairytale magic brought to life on stage – a true masterpiece of the era! I have to confess, I even sneaked a trip back to London for the grand occasion – it was simply divine!
This was the period, lovelies, where fashion began to blossom with a more defined and vibrant femininity, with a focus on bold and graceful silhouettes. It was an era where designers embraced the art of romanticism. This perfectly reflected in ballet costumes, especially tutus. They embraced rich colours and romantic embellishments - imagine lace, ribbons, sparkling sequins and delicate flowers delicately woven into the tutus, transforming the dancers into vision of enchanting loveliness. It was simply sublime!
The 1950s were a time for fun, frills, and fabulous tutus. We saw tutus transformed from just stagewear into a real statement in the fashion world! Even non-dancers were seen rocking their own take on the tutu with frilly, voluminous skirts, or by incorporating elements of its design like delicate layers of tulle in their outfits. Oh how much I love fashion!
This was also the time of glamorous stars like Margot Fonteyn and Moira Shearer who gracefully donned their tutus on the silver screen! There's a reason the 1950s were dubbed "the golden age of ballet" and these leading ladies were, in my humble opinion, absolutely radiant in their tutu choices. They're real icons of beauty and grace, inspiring us with their amazing talent.
But let’s take a moment to explore tutus in a broader sense. While the ballerina's tutu may be a signature piece, we must not forget that there are a multitude of variations – each serving a specific purpose. The classical, multi-layered, full-length tutus that you often associate with ballets like Swan Lake are what you see adorning ballerinas on stage – truly mesmerising! But we also see the "pas de bourrée" tutus for character dancing, shorter tutus designed for fast movements, and, for contemporary and modern ballet, tutus with modern forms, embracing new materials, fabrics, and techniques!
So whether you're captivated by the ethereal beauty of classical tutus or the innovative artistry of contemporary designs, remember, my dear readers, the world of the tutu is endlessly exciting, embracing all styles and genres of ballet.
