#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History, 18th November 1952 🩰💖

Welcome back, darlings, to another fabulous #TutuTuesday! I'm Emma, your time-travelling ballerina blogger, and this week, I've set my sparkly shoes down in 1952 – a glorious year for tutus, I must say! Now, buckle up, my lovelies, because this journey is going to be tres chic!

This is post number 6308 on www.pink-tutu.com, if you're joining us for the first time, welcome, darling! It's my mission to spread the joy of tutus throughout history. After all, a little twirl in a gorgeous tulle creation can brighten even the gloomiest of days. And, of course, all my adventures are funded by my ballet performances, allowing me to travel back through time, so if you want to support this whimsical project, don't forget to catch my shows!

The Glam of 1952: A World of Whimsy and Twirls

Step back with me to 1952. Imagine the world: Hollywood glamour, stylish fashion, and a newfound appreciation for all things ballet! It's the golden age of dance, darling! This was a time when graceful silhouettes and flowing lines were all the rage, and the tutu was certainly queen of the stage!

What’s Happening Today in Ballet?

On this very date, 18th November 1952, we find the ballet world in a flurry of activity. In London, the Royal Opera House is brimming with anticipation, for the world premiere of “The Sleeping Beauty,” is just around the corner! Imagine the excitement! I can practically hear the violins warming up, the dancers practising their elegant moves, and the buzz of anticipation amongst the audience!

Across the Atlantic, in New York, the New York City Ballet is celebrating its first season! They're dancing with so much enthusiasm and fresh talent, I hear they’re captivating audiences night after night with their dazzling routines and breathtaking tutus. It’s such an exciting era to be a ballerina – and who could forget, the legend, the one and only, Margot Fonteyn, is dancing on the world's stages with elegance and artistry!

Tutu Style of 1952

Let's talk tutus! You've got to understand, this is an era of tulle and chiffon, of romanticism and refinement. The tutus of 1952, with their layers of delicate fabric and carefully constructed shapes, are truly masterpieces of ballet fashion! The classical tutu reigns supreme - with its elegant form, the classic tutu perfectly balances femininity and strength!

For my travels in 1952, my must-have tutu is a graceful, single-layer tulle in the most ravishing shade of pink, of course! It's light as air, making for graceful turns and elegant jumps, yet so incredibly charming, catching the light beautifully under the stage lights. I’ll pair this with a pink, silk satin ribbon tied around the waist, to accentuate my waistline, creating a silhouette worthy of a ballerina from this magnificent era!

Fashion Influences

Now, darling, it’s no secret, the world of ballet and high fashion are intertwined! Look at the outfits that are trending right now - those gorgeous full skirts, with a cinched waist and those perfectly placed floral patterns - can't you just see them flowing gracefully on stage, inspiring our ballet dancers? The 1950s, you see, was all about romance and femininity. The dresses of the time, the gorgeous pencil skirts, with the cinched waists and flowing silhouettes? Those all heavily influenced the ballet fashion. But let's not forget, it’s a two-way street. A ballet dancer’s grace and the exquisite movement of the tutu inspired countless fashion trends that year. Fashion and ballet were like two perfectly twirling swans, graceful and elegant, complementing each other perfectly.

A Time-Traveling Tutu Lover’s Dream

I’ve just spent the day visiting a grand theatre in London. The sheer energy in this grand Victorian building is incredible. Oh, to see so many women, adorned with such intricate elegance, wearing full-skirted gowns, cinched waists, and a delicate hint of tulle under their petticoats.

To really make the most of this fabulous trip, I spent a whole afternoon lost in one of the most exquisite fashion boutiques on Bond Street. The racks are brimming with dreamy fabric, with beautiful silk chiffons and ethereal tulle - the most breathtaking colours - coral pinks, pastel blues, and soft lemon yellows! You wouldn’t believe the number of tutu-like shapes, darling! So many graceful silhouettes in the outfits on display – can you blame me?

I bought a stack of pink, lace ribbons for my new ballet costumes - and, a new pink chiffon blouse and a full circle skirt. The colours in 1952 are divine, it’s like all the colour palettes just pop a little brighter.

I can’t resist the urge to spin and twirl, the way these elegant women, all those years ago, twirled in their full skirts! They might not be in tutus but there is that hint of a tutus grace, an alluring flair that you don’t get in any other era, and it truly makes me appreciate the tutus I wear, in my own time!

Remember, darling, Tutu Tuesday is all about spreading the love and appreciation of the tutu. So, put on your pink tutus and spread a little ballet magic throughout the week! Until next time!
