#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse Back to 1953 - Post 6328
Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, your favourite tutu-loving, time-travelling fashionista, back for another instalment of #TutuTuesday, the blog dedicated to all things tutu!
This week, I’m whisking you all the way back to April 7th, 1953! Can you imagine, the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation! My time travel journey took me straight to London, the centre of all things fashionable and a veritable hub for the performing arts, especially ballet! It's incredible how a love for dance crosses time and space, even making my pink tutu look almost au courant amidst the era's fashions.
The atmosphere in London was electrifying – everyone was gearing up for the big event, a time of national celebration and a palpable excitement buzzing in the air. I, however, had other things on my mind: the magnificent Royal Ballet!
A World of Grace
Oh, darling, let me tell you – it was a spectacle! I saw The Sleeping Beauty at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and let me tell you, those dancers! They were like ethereal beings in their stunning costumes, moving with such grace and precision, bringing the fairytale to life right before my eyes! Every step, every twirl, was like a perfectly executed piece of art. And those tutus… chef's kiss
The Power of Pink
Now, I know you all know my weakness – pink, darling, pink! And thankfully, even in 1953, pink was having a moment on the London stage. From delicate shades of blush to vibrant hot pink, these ballet tutus were the epitome of elegance and femininity. They sparkled and swirled with the dancers' movements, truly encapsulating the joy and beauty of ballet.
But you know what I discovered? That the real magic of tutus goes beyond their aesthetic appeal. You see, back in 1953, tutus weren't just something for dancers. These gorgeous, ethereal creations, were a symbol of dreams, aspiration, and the freedom to be yourself. It's like they took on a life of their own, encouraging everyone to embrace their inner ballerina, a little bit of grace and fantasy.
A Tutu for Every Occasion
While tutus were still firmly associated with ballet, the influence of dance and those delightful tutus had already crept into everyday life, even then. And not just the ballet studios either! Just like today, London’s most glamorous parties were dotted with elegant ladies, adorning fluffy tulle creations that were all the rage at cocktail parties, fashionable events, and even the theatre! It's truly delightful to witness how a dance costume could inspire such creative and beautiful fashion trends.
Travel and Tradition
I took the train from Derbyshire – nothing beats that charming journey! There’s something quite lovely about looking out the window at the beautiful British countryside whilst enjoying the thwack, thwack rhythm of the train against the track. It felt like a time travel experience in its own right. Arriving at Euston station with the air buzzing with the excitement of London, I knew my day was going to be spectacular.
Of course, I had to visit a few shops. Liberty of London is a must! It's filled with gorgeous fabrics, delightful textures, and colours that would make any ballerina weak at the knees. Oh, and the hats! It's truly a must-see when you're in London, and even if you aren't - just come anyway!
