#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 6349!
Hey darlings! 🩰
It’s Emma here, your very own Tutu-Time-Travelling friend, ready to take you on another whirl through history in the magical world of ballet! This week, we're setting our time machine to a truly glorious year - September 1st, 1953! 🕰️
Can you imagine? We’re practically waltzing into the era of iconic dancers like Margot Fonteyn and Moira Shearer - imagine those tutus, darlings! 😍
But let's delve into the actual fashion, shall we?
1953 was a year brimming with elegant glamour, a time when women's fashion was all about that perfectly sculpted hourglass figure, cinched in at the waist and flowing with a graceful skirt - just like a ballerina! Remember all that New Look fashion from the late 40s that was so dramatic and full? Well, that continued, but things were getting a little bit sleeker in 1953. That silhouette is a bit like what I call the "ballet" silhouette, wouldn't you say? The movement is quite similar to how ballerinas dance!
In fact, even the most popular shoes in 1953 were ballerina pumps – cute, stylish little shoes for day and night, flat and soft for maximum comfort and elegant femininity! It seems everyone wanted to have the ballerina-inspired look - we can thank Audrey Hepburn for a huge boost in that, wouldn't you say? With her gorgeous dance-inspired style in "Roman Holiday" and "Sabrina" those adorable little flat shoes were the height of fashion, making our ballerinas look ever so chic.
Speaking of ballet, on this very day in 1953, there was something quite spectacular taking place on the London stage - the Royal Ballet, still under the name the Sadler’s Wells Ballet back then, was premiering a masterpiece called "Homage to the Queen". 👑✨ Imagine, a full ballet piece specially made for Queen Elizabeth II, it must have been absolutely enchanting! Now, I am so kicking myself that I missed this performance - I mean, wouldn't you love to be there, swirling in a fabulous pink tutu and watching a performance that was truly groundbreaking?
To be honest, I’m a little bit smitten with this ballet because, of all the famous choreographers from the time, it was the brilliant Frederick Ashton who was chosen to create it! He's famous for such iconic works as "The Sleeping Beauty," and I’ve seen these a few times - well, except, obviously, I saw them in the actual time period - so amazing! 😉 He's really an inspiration to any dancer, past or present! And that’s what makes September 1st 1953 so interesting! Just think of all those incredible ballet stories in 1953 alone! We really need to stop and appreciate those stories. And also appreciate the magnificent artistry of ballet shoes, darling, they are just exquisite. What will I be wearing with my Tutu for my next time travelling adventure I wonder?! Hmm…maybe I need to get a new one...😉
Anyway, I’m just a little bit obsessed by that iconic tutu era and how fashion has been so influenced by its designs. And of course, my mission in life remains the same – to bring more sparkling joy to the world by spreading the magic of the pink tutu. 💕
