#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 6397 - August 3rd, 1954!
Hello darlings! Welcome back to my weekly #TutuTuesday post! It’s Emma here, your time-travelling pink tutu aficionado, ready to whisk you off on a delightful trip through the enchanting history of tutus.
Today, we’re heading back to August 3rd, 1954. Can you believe it? Just over 68 years ago! I've just travelled back from a most glamorous performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City - imagine, a whole ocean journey by train! It was absolutely divine! But I must tell you all about this date's incredible fashion connection.
So, what were people wearing in 1954? It was a time of vibrant colours, bold shapes and the ever-popular 'New Look' style - that’s all thanks to the incredible Christian Dior. I love his use of swirling shapes and full skirts. That’s something that really resonates with my pink tutu-wearing heart! And the beauty of it? He brought back the focus to a feminine silhouette after the more practical fashions of wartime. What could be better? It was a glorious decade for dressing up and making a statement, whether you were heading to the theatre or dancing the night away at the club!
But darling, I know you’re all here for tutus! Let's explore the ballet world a little shall we? I was so excited to learn that 1954 was the year that the Royal Ballet took its first ever trip overseas, all the way to the Edinburgh Festival. The audience absolutely adored them, especially the costumes! The elegance, the lightness, the flow… chefs kiss Now, while tutus were definitely a mainstay in ballet by 1954, we had just started seeing some truly magnificent new designs emerge. Imagine: full, flowing skirts and elaborate details that just begged for the spotlight! I even heard whispers of the "Bell Skirt," a truly incredible design made for Giselle. This little number just had everyone mesmerised! I’ve got to find one for my next performance!
What's a Tutu Tuesday without a bit of fun, though? So, I'm taking my pink tutu love a step further and inviting all of you to embrace the #PinkTutuChallenge for August 3rd! Yes, you heard right, darling. I want you all to get into a pink tutu! You could do a silly dance in the street, go to the theatre for an impromptu show, wear your best pink tutu out on the town! Maybe a lovely ballet class? Be brave, darlings! Have fun! I want to see you embracing the tutu life and spreading some much-needed pink and sparkle into the world.
Remember, darling, that every day can be a Tutu Tuesday! So don your best tutu, twirl around with confidence and keep spreading that #PinkTutuLove! I'll see you next Tuesday for another captivating journey into the wonderful world of tutus!
Lots of love,
Emma
