#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: October 19th, 1954!
Hello my lovelies! Welcome back to another delightful #TutuTuesday blog post from yours truly, Emma, your favourite time-travelling pink tutu aficionado! Today we're waltzing back to 1954, a glorious time when tutus were taking the world by storm, and what a magical journey it's been!
This week's #TutuTuesday adventure brings us to the grand and bustling heart of London! Now, I know some of you fancy-free ladies might think the 50s was all poodle skirts and bobby socks. Well, you're only half right! While poodle skirts might have reigned supreme on the streets, the world of ballet was all about graceful elegance, luxurious fabrics and, of course, the most fabulous tutus!
Just imagine, my darlings: the air alive with the scent of freshly-pressed silks and the sweet melody of strings as the Royal Ballet dances under the magnificent chandeliers of the Royal Opera House. Oh, what a time to be alive!
Today is October 19th, and it's the grand opening of a new season for the Royal Ballet! It's a day for the grandest tutus and the most dazzling performances. Think impossibly delicate, wispy layers, cascading like a cloud of ballerina dreams. The whole of London is buzzing with anticipation. Fashionistas are flocking to Liberty's for the latest chic outfits and everyone is simply bursting to see the newest creations!
The atmosphere in the air is electric. You can almost feel the energy of the city thrumming to the rhythm of the ballet. And with such excitement swirling around me, how could I possibly be anywhere else but here, soaking in the atmosphere? I managed to sneak into the rehearsal room to catch a glimpse of the dancers practising and let me tell you, the air practically crackled with excitement and grace.
So, where can we see the magic happening today, you ask? Well, tonight's show is none other than the ever-popular "Giselle." The beautiful and ethereal Giselle's iconic white tutu, which represents purity and innocence, is a sight to behold! Imagine shimmering silk, painstakingly hand-sewn and billowing with every arabesque and grand jetรฉ! It truly is the most enchanting of tutus.
You know, one of my favourite things about time-travelling is getting to experience all these fascinating trends in fashion and dance. Today, the tutus are all about simplicity and elegance. Imagine a symphony of layered tulle and silk, with a minimal, streamlined silhouette. A tutu doesn't need a million embellishments or ruffles to be breathtaking. It's all about that fluid elegance, my loves!
I also love exploring the different kinds of tutus they wear during these grand productions! We have the classical pointe shoes with their exquisite pointe work, paired with those delicate, sweeping tutus that move like clouds. You know, I'm seriously tempted to head out for a quick shopping trip! Maybe I can snag myself a lovely piece from a vintage shop, just to bring the 50s ballet look to the present day.
Don't forget to follow my adventures and see what I've uncovered! And don't forget to share your favourite tutu moments in the comments below, my loves!
But of course, no trip back in time would be complete without a visit to my beloved Derbyshire. I recently spent an afternoon in a charming little ballet school nestled among the hills, enjoying the local performances. The tutus they were wearing were charming! Lots of pretty pinks and baby blues, perfect for budding young ballerinas! It was truly delightful to see such passion for dance, no matter where you are.
After all, as the Queen of the pink tutu herself, my mission is to make the world a little more twirly, a little more magical, and of course, a whole lot pinker. Because you know what, everyone looks good in pink, especially when they're wearing a tutu.
So, until next week's #TutuTuesday adventure, keep twirling and keep dreaming. Remember, there's a ballerina waiting to be unleashed inside us all. Now go find her and unleash her!
With love and pirouettes,
Emma
