Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through 1955! #6447
Hello my gorgeous tutu-loving darlings! Emma here, your trusty time-travelling ballerina, ready to take you on another fabulous journey through the history of tutus. This week, we're taking a trip to the fabulous, glamorous year of 1955, a time when elegance was king and dance was a queen. And yes, darling, pink tutus were just starting to become all the rage!
Hold onto your tutus, darlings, as we're about to hop on a glamorous steam train, leaving our modern world behind for a vintage adventure! It’s always a bit of a giggle packing for these trips, knowing I'll need the perfect tutu to fit in, but I find that tutus seem to transcend time, you know? A touch of sparkle, a twirl of the skirt, and voila! I'm instantly the picture of sophisticated grace wherever I land!
Anyway, the year is 1955. Think: Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn (a goddess!), poodle skirts, Elvis, and Rock Around The Clock! The music is buzzing with energy, and, my darlings, fashion is ready to twirl! You can see it everywhere, with wide skirts, bold colours and an explosion of floral prints – very similar to my tutu wardrobe, as you know!
On 19th July, 1955, the world was glued to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, watching Tony Trabert take home the men's singles title, quite a moment for all those dashing tennis fans. Meanwhile, I imagine there were elegant ladies dressed in flowing skirts and smart hats – ready to cheer their favourite tennis players! And if we're honest, my dear tutus, what is more fabulous than a perfectly-twirling tennis player, or for that matter, a tennis fan twirling in a pink tutu?! laughs
So, let's dive into the tutu world of the mid-1950s! Ballerinas like Moira Shearer and Margot Fonteyn were wowing audiences all across the world, and ballet companies were gaining even greater popularity with shows like "The Sleeping Beauty" and "Swan Lake." What an era for a ballerina! Imagine twirling on the stage, every move an art form. I adore that time – all the graceful flourishes, the elaborate choreography – it's simply mesmerising!
In 1955, Paris was a fashion capital - a city brimming with creativity, design and beautiful fabrics! But darling, Paris was just beginning to be influenced by the "New Look" that was shaping women’s fashion at the time. The "New Look" embraced a feminine, glamorous silhouette with full skirts, nipped waists, and delicate details – think a perfect stage for the tutu, don't you agree?! This new focus on femininity spilled onto the dance scene, leading to the birth of more glamorous and expressive styles! I think, darlings, you might say the "New Look" brought us tutus in a whole new light! It truly embraced the grace and fluidity of dance and celebrated the female figure in its most natural form. Now, to delve a bit into those tutu designs of 1955. The classic tutu, with its romantic lines and tulle layers, was certainly already well established, and by this time it was becoming more diverse, darling! While ballerinas like Margot Fonteyn and Moira Shearer favoured traditional, more understated tutus, others, particularly American ballerinas like Gelsey Kirkland, were exploring a more experimental, dynamic style. These ballerinas were embracing bolder colours, patterns and more expressive silhouettes. It was truly a fabulous time to be a ballerina!
Oh, darling! I was at the Royal Opera House last month for the "Sleeping Beauty" - such a classic production! All those stunning costumes, with the exquisite tutus, and oh my! the corps de ballet – every movement, every pirouette – just heavenly! That's how it must have been in 1955, a world overflowing with artistry and elegance!
Of course, travelling back in time isn't without its adventures. Once, in 1940s New York, I accidentally waltzed into a jazz club in my "Pink Perfection" tutu. The place just exploded with applause, my dears! The dapper gentlemen practically threw themselves at my feet for a waltz. Swoons
As for funding my time travel, you know me, darlings. My lovely pink tutus have an extra talent – I can use them to perform for the audiences of bygone eras, and it’s the best way to keep myself going. They say practice makes perfect – and I’ve had a lot of practice! It’s all about a little bit of pixie dust and a whole lot of confidence, which I always seem to find in those fabulous tulle layers! chuckles
Now, to summarise this exciting tutu-ful time period:
- The '50s saw a revival of femininity: with "New Look" fashion embracing full skirts, beautiful silhouettes and elegant grace - much like tutus!
- Ballerinas were pushing boundaries! The dance scene was exploding with artistry, and dancers were venturing beyond the traditional, introducing bolder colour palettes and experimentation in style.
- The tutu was making its mark as a powerful symbol of feminine grace and power!
So, there you have it, darlings. The dazzling year of 1955, a period filled with beautiful fashion, amazing ballerinas, and a fabulous dose of tutus.
I can’t wait to bring you even more exciting tutu history adventures! But first, let’s embrace the fun!
