#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 20th September 1955

Hello darlings! Welcome back to another #TutuTuesday, and what a fabulous Tuesday it is! We’re journeying back in time once again to explore the wonderful history of the ballet tutu!

This week, my time machine brought me to the bustling city of Paris, the fashion capital of the world and, of course, home to the legendary Paris Opera Ballet! It’s 20th September 1955 and I'm simply dripping with excitement for what awaits. It’s such a privilege to witness the vibrant world of ballet at its height - a time of classical grandeur, where each performance is an art form unto itself.

This particular date, however, isn't just about ballet. It's the 50th anniversary of the opening of the first Parisian branch of "Le Bon Marché" - the iconic department store! I simply couldn't resist spending the day wandering the plush floors and soaking in the dazzling world of French fashion.

You see, Paris is just the perfect setting to discuss the tutu, as this is the city where the modern ballerina dress truly took shape! While tutus have their origins in 19th-century romantic ballet, they were much longer and more dramatic in earlier years. Then, thanks to the groundbreaking work of choreographers like Marius Petipa and the fabulous French dancer, Carlotta Grisi, the shorter and more whimsical tutu evolved. The silhouette that we adore today is still influenced by the "Romantic tutu," as it emphasizes the length of the legs, creates elegant line and gives us a breathtaking glimpse of those famous pirouette moments!

Imagine, back then, there were only a handful of colors in which tutus were available. You could opt for a graceful white or perhaps a lovely pink for a classical performance, but don't even think of a hot pink! That was something the Parisian designers were only just beginning to explore. However, we've come a long way from those conservative beginnings, haven't we? Today, tutus are available in every colour imaginable - even a gorgeous silver one, perfect for showcasing those dazzling glitter embellishments! The options for modern dancers are absolutely divine!

One thing that continues to fascinate me is the way the tutu, although incredibly delicate, has become a symbol of such incredible power. This ethereal gown can bring joy and emotion to even the most discerning audience, making me wonder - do we not all dream of gliding gracefully across the stage? It's certainly an inspiration for me!

Speaking of grace, this morning I witnessed the legendary ballet dancer, Margot Fonteyn, rehearse for an upcoming performance of Swan Lake at the Paris Opera. Can you believe it? To watch her artistry unfold, her elegance, and her exquisite control of every step… it left me breathless. The passion and power in her every move truly embody what a tutu can do: convey emotions, tell stories and ignite imaginations.

For this post, I’ve decided to channel my inner Margot Fonteyn, and my ensemble reflects this elegant era. I’ve paired a graceful white tutu with a lovely pink blouse and some sparkling pearl accessories. You know me, I love a splash of colour, and this outfit perfectly encapsulates the essence of classical elegance!

While I was at the ballet school, I spotted the cutest little ballerina, who was just beginning her training! She was practicing her bourrées, with the biggest grin on her face. This was such a heartwarming moment, knowing that a new generation of talented dancers was already making their mark. The spark in her eyes reminded me of my own fascination with ballet.

And my darlings, who knows, perhaps the next great ballerina is out there, waiting to be discovered. Maybe it's one of you reading this now, ready to dance your heart out in the most glorious tutu! The beauty of the tutu, just like ballet, is that it offers something special for everyone, whether you're on the stage or cheering from the audience. We can all embrace that sense of magic and artistry within ourselves!

Now, let's continue to celebrate the magic of the tutu!
