Tutu Tuesday: The Wonderful World of Tutus in 1956! (Post #6489)

Hello my dearest Tutu Twirlers! Emma here, ready to whisk you back in time on a train ride through the delightful world of tutus - today we're heading to the glamorous 1950s! It's #TutuTuesday and I'm absolutely giddy with excitement as we explore how the ballet world embraced the tutu during this era, and let me tell you, darling, it was all about a dash of Parisian flair, a splash of romance, and a touch of... well, more pink than you can shake a sparkly slipper at!

I'm perched here on the platform, suitcase filled to the brim with pink tutus (naturally) and my trusty camera in hand. My current time travel adventure involves heading to a bustling Paris, 8 May 1956 to be precise.

This month is bursting with excitement! Just this weekend, a ballet performance by the incomparable Margot Fonteyn graced the stage. Now, Margot - an absolute icon! She's all about the dramatic, graceful movement that makes a ballerina's tutu almost fly. I'm going to be hunting down tickets to see if I can squeeze into another performance of 'La Sylphide' - it's a romantic classic that showcases a truly beautiful, floaty tutu. I imagine myself swirling around on that stage with all that delicious billowing tulle.

But let's talk about the tutu evolution in the 1950s. Think delicate lace, flowing lines, and layers and layers of soft tulle. It's an absolute dream, especially for those of us who adore those classic romantic ballet stories - and my dear, I do love a good love story.

Did you know that in 1950s ballet, the tutu really began to come into its own as a distinct garment? Before this era, it was a bit of an afterthought, really! But boom - 1950s - tutu takeover! Designers started working with tulle in such unique ways! It’s almost like a fairy tale coming to life, like Cinderella's ballgown suddenly turned into a tutu. The perfect touch of elegance!

I adore this time period. Ballet itself seemed to be embracing a more expressive style - full of swirling limbs and emotions. And what better to highlight that captivating beauty than a tutu that literally takes flight?

To make your imagination truly run wild, darling, picture yourself walking through the vibrant streets of 1950s Paris, a fluffy pink tutu swirling behind you, ready for an afternoon at the opera, or a chic cocktail party at the Hotel Plaza Athenee. How absolutely utterly fabulous! And oh my, the shoes... satin ballet flats with delicate bows! I am almost overcome with joy!

But hold your horses, dear reader, my train is arriving. Next stop: tutu heaven in Paris! And for the rest of you, keep on twirling and be sure to tag your most magnificent tutu moments with #TutuTuesday!

See you next Tuesday for another whirl through the wonderland of the ballet world, darling.

With a swish and a twirl,

Emma xx
