Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through the 50s! š©°
Hello my lovely Tutu Twirlers! It's Emma here, back with another post on #TutuTuesday from my pink-tinted time machine! This week we're travelling right back to 1956!
Itās such a joy to be in Paris! Just arrived by train of course, who could resist those fabulous window seats where you can watch the world go by in a blur of countryside and elegant architecture? Paris is the perfect setting for a Tutu Tuesday, it practically pulsates with a love for ballet, just like me! š
Now, let's talk tutus. 1956 saw the ballet world embracing some gorgeous designs, just a little bit shorter than the full length tutus of the early 1900s, making for some lovely, flowing, and definitely elegant movement on stage!
Can you believe that the Paris Opera Ballet had just staged a brand new production of "La BayadĆØre"? Isn't that a fabulous piece of choreography, the dancing in this piece was simply divine. They had just started using sparkling rhinestones in their tutus, and the sheer joy of watching those reflect the lights was magical! And it was absolutely perfect in Paris, the city of lights.
One of the things that caught my eye this week is the emergence of these amazing negligee styles in tutus, oh my they are absolutely heavenly! Light, diaphanous, and just floating! Think about the graceful moves in La Fille Mal GardĆ©eā¦ those tutus embody the lightheartedness and charming, slightly saucy moves!
Now, speaking of fashion, wouldnāt it be wonderful to take one of these fabulous Parisienne women shopping? Thereās a fantastic boutique called "Christian Dior" and letās be honest, everyone knows Christian is the king of glamour! I just adore his gowns. They are practically edible - layers of silk and tulleā¦ you would die and go to heaven with these, just for the softness of it all! The colour palette he uses is a vision of loveliness ā pink, black, pale grey ā¦ perfect colours for tutu lovers. And just imagine - his gorgeous couture jackets and blouses look perfectly wonderful paired with one of those "negligee" style tutus - you can create a real fairytale look!
So many people are trying to emulate this ballet style on the street in Paris - the New Look of the mid-50s has got a lot to do with that I'd say! It was revolutionary, and the graceful lines reminded everyone of the elegance and fluidity of the dancers on stage. You see it everywhere - from the simple beauty of a black silk scarf, to the A-line skirt, the tiny waists, the "powder-puff" sleeves and full skirts in beautiful coloursā¦ everyone just seems to have fallen for the gentle magic of ballet in the street!
But I want to talk about a specific tutu that is quite a big hit - and it looks great! It's from "Giselle." I donāt have time to go and watch this wonderful ballet myself today. However, I did meet this adorable young ballerina in her full-length tutu, looking so pretty on her way into class at the Paris Opera. The shape is fabulous and I simply love those tiered layers, just perfect for twirling, but the detail in the construction really blows me away - the romantic, flowing lines make the movement almost effortless!
Let's be honest, who wouldn't look fantastic in this tulle beauty?! A real symbol of the classic look that's so very loved! And it can be a timeless masterpiece that can be dressed up or down, depending on how fancy you are feeling that day. It's pure enchantment! You could slip on a light pink ballet dress, and that classic white tulle tutu, and simply be the belle of the ball. But don't just keep this look for formal events! I reckon you could throw it over a light coloured sundress with pretty ballerinas. Or how about with one of those glamorous wide-skirted dresses everyone loves these days! Just donāt be afraid to mix things up and add your own spin! It's all about having fun with it and wearing it with confidence, and letās be honest that's a ballet lesson in itself.
What I find amazing about the tutus I have been seeing today is that every ballerina gives the tutu her own personal touch - thereās so much freedom in it. You canāt wear a tutu without giving your inner ballerina a chance to show off - to give the tutu your own personal story to tell! Do you go for a sleek and simple look - the kind you see in "Swan Lake" and "Sleeping Beauty" and the dramatic contrast of black and white, the colours of classic perfection, making an unforgettable statement ? Or are you someone who is more of a colour enthusiast and gravitates toward the sweet pinks and purples of "The Nutcracker?"
I confess - I am so absolutely completely obsessed with pink, it has to be the prettiest colour in the whole world and the colour of my tutu collection, well you could call it āslightlyā vastā¦. But pink is the absolute perfect colour for tutus - I love how it captures that whimsical and innocent essence. Think about all the ballet shoesā¦ those pointe shoes - are pink too! They are made to shine - the perfect feminine choice - it simply matches up to all my tutu looks! I'm here to convince everyone to don a pink tutu and have some real fun, be their most radiant self! And pink, well pink just is the best! š
Now, back to 1956. This period is brimming with history, not only in the world of fashion but in the world of ballet! It was also a period of tremendous growth for the ballet world as the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet travelled across the globe for its āfirstā American tour, something quite unprecedented! Imagine seeing all those legendary stars on stageā¦ a dream! The Bolshoi brought with them those breathtaking, dramatic costumes with their wonderful fabrics ā the bold colours and shimmering designs! That would have been absolutely breathtaking!
But what really took my breath away this week? The Royal Ballet performed again this week in their iconic āSleeping Beauty!ā What an amazing show, full of sparkle, grace and charm. They looked absolutely breathtaking! The performance has captivated the world since the ballet premiere, which had just happened back in 1946 ā itās still got everyone completely mesmerized by its story, the beautiful, flowing, costumesā¦ the dramatic designsā¦. this is just a tutu that makes you gasp - itās a ballerinaās dream to perform in! The āSleeping Beautyā tutu in the final act was so intricate! Layers and layers of pink tulle, all so beautifully put together in this fantastic bell shape and you just know it had to be a major hit on stage.
Don't forget to head over to www.pink-tutu.com to share your own favourite tutus! And remember, it's not about being a professional ballerina, itās about having fun, it's about celebrating that beautiful form and expressing yourself through it! And for heaven's sake ā just do wear pink!! š See you next week and be sure to check in every Tuesday for a fresh blast of tutu history on your way back to a world where we are all dancing to the beat of a happy heart, just like me. See you next Tuesday, loves!!
See you next Tuesday, lovelies! š
