#TutuTuesday: A Trip Back in Time to 1956 - The Tutu Gets a Makeover!
Hello my darling tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your resident pink tutu devotee, ready to whisk you back to a time of poodle skirts, sock hops, and - you guessed it! - a whole lotta tutu! It’s Tuesday, which means it's time for our weekly #TutuTuesday journey through the history of this most fabulous garment! Today we're diving back into the swirling, sparkly, wonderful world of 1956!
This is post number 6497, and I'm so glad you’re here. Grab a cup of your favourite tea, maybe a little slice of Victoria sponge, and let's go on a journey to discover what tutu trends were making waves 67 years ago!
My adventures in time travel require quite a bit of ballet. Thankfully, my Derbyshire roots make this easy - all those years of pirouette practice came in handy! But as any seasoned ballerina knows, the costume plays a crucial role. In 1956, it was the tutu, and oh, how things have changed since then!
Imagine yourself back in 1956 - the world is a vibrant kaleidoscope of colours! Picture it: poodle skirts and saddle shoes reign supreme on the streets. A big ol' Elvis record is spinning, and we're heading for a sock hop! But you know me, my heart beats for ballet, so my head's elsewhere, imagining the ballet world of 1956.
The tutus worn in ballet during the '50s were undergoing a serious style update! Gone were the bulky, layered, almost comical-looking Romantic-era tutus. It was all about a new wave of streamlined, modern-day elegance! Think sleek lines, carefully chosen fabrics - oh, how I yearn for those luxurious materials, with their textures and movement. This was the birth of the iconic, iconic "Romantic tutu". It had shorter skirts with less tulle, accentuating the dancer's beautiful physique. It wasn’t just a piece of fabric, it was a true statement piece.
We had the likes of legendary ballet companies like the Bolshoi Ballet and the Royal Ballet captivating audiences, making headlines. You couldn’t swing a feather boa in those times without bumping into the gorgeous creations of famous tutus from Ballet Russes, and my favourite! De Basil's Ballets Russes - all creating these fantastic tutus and revolutionizing what a tutu could be! I can’t even tell you how much I love to see the beautiful old images in my favourite vintage magazines.
In fact, this year, 1956, was all about the Bolshoi Ballet - they graced the stages of Europe and the United States, captivating audiences everywhere with their incredible performances. You see, those grand theatres had beautiful stages - everything felt theatrical, dramatic, and even a bit whimsical. Imagine - I’d be a total tourist - off to see these world-renowned ballet companies! Can you imagine me there? In my pretty pink tutu, taking it all in? I have this picture of myself holding a little vintage theatre programme - just as stylish as the costumes!
And as any discerning ballet enthusiast knows, the choice of colour played a crucial role! Gone were the traditional white and black tutus, replaced by the captivating use of color - a rainbow of hues gracing the stages. From bold shades like fiery reds, stunning greens, to those captivating rich blues - Oh, darling, my fashionista heart simply soars! Can you picture these vibrant colours on a ballerina gracefully swirling across the stage?
The fashion world was also abuzz, darling! Think poodle skirts with a hint of a bouffant and ballet flats - there was definitely an air of romance and playful femininity - a little bit of ballet influence crept its way into even everyday style. This was a period where the line between stage and everyday life blurred and the ballet took center stage!
Now, for something a little exciting, we have to talk about the date itself! 1956 - specifically 03 July! Can you imagine what was happening this very day in the world of dance? It's possible that on this day a budding ballerina took her very first ballet class, the start of their own glorious ballet career! It’s a date that whispers with excitement and possibilities, like a well-loved and perfectly-turned page in a dance history book. It reminds us all to keep pushing forward, like those gorgeous tutu-clad ballerinas on the stage.
You see, tutus, my darlings, are so much more than fabric! They represent a timeless artform that spans generations and continues to captivate the hearts of people around the globe. We can learn from these moments in history. What started as an important staple for those graceful ballerina movements has transformed into a modern-day style icon.
If you haven't already, get yourself to a ballet performance this week, or grab a cup of tea and catch up on the world of ballet - you can find plenty of clips online, even full-length ballet shows to watch in the comfort of your own home! Just think about all the fabulous tutus and stunning ballets to discover. There’s nothing better than sitting back in your favourite chair and getting lost in the world of ballet.
In the meantime, keep those tutu dreams flowing! And as always, remember: every day is a good day to twirl in your tutu, dear reader, be bold! I want you to find your confidence and twirl, prance, pirouette and leap to your hearts content. Remember, when it comes to tutus, it’s all about feeling empowered and embracing that incredible sense of freedom, like the ballerinas you admire so much.
Until next #TutuTuesday!
Warmly,
Emma x
