#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 13th November 1956! (Post #6516)

Hello my darling dears, and welcome back to another week of Tutu Tuesday here on www.pink-tutu.com! Today we’re twirling back to 13th November 1956, a date that just positively buzzes with the magic of the ballet world, and honestly, you simply have to hear about it.

Now, I know what you’re thinking - you lovely lot love a bit of history, and this 1956 date is before your favourite pink-clad ballerina was even a twinkle in her mummy's eye! Well, fear not my darling tutus, I can transport us all back in time! And guess how I did it? Yes, by hopping onto a lovely red train that took me whizzing back in time!

Now, this particular trip took me all the way to New York City - what a glorious city for a ballerina to be in, let me tell you! As soon as I arrived at Grand Central Station, I took a quick detour to Saks Fifth Avenue. What better place to stock up on beautiful pink silk, for, you guessed it, another sensational new pink tutu! I mean, can you ever have too much pink? Of course not! The delightful shop assistants (I can tell they've got their eye on that amazing new ballet costume I have on, doesn't it make my pale skin just glow? Pink is so flattering on pale skin!) - anyway, they are telling me about a rather splendid ballet performance by none other than the legendary Margot Fonteyn! It seems like everyone's talking about this iconic ballerina - even on the New York subway they've got adverts for her performance!

Of course, no self-respecting pink-loving ballerina could resist a chance to see Fonteyn. So, with a quick change into my new pink tutu, off I went to the Metropolitan Opera House! Honestly, what a glorious evening!

The performance was truly something to behold. Fonteyn's talent was astounding, and the theatre itself, oh my! All those velvet seats and glittering chandeliers… I must have been absolutely the envy of every ballerina in New York that evening! The story was from Romeo and Juliet - the ultimate romantic tale and the perfect backdrop for Fonteyn's masterful dancing. It was all swirling skirts and exquisite jumps. And to make the experience even more magical, the audience roared with applause and the orchestra played a delightful melody of romance.

Now, 13th November 1956 wasn’t all just ballerinas and beautiful buildings. Whilst in New York, I couldn’t resist a little bit of retail therapy - it is a fashion city after all - and what better way to celebrate this fab evening than to purchase a new little black dress? The little black dress - an essential for any fashionable lady! You simply must own at least three, preferably in pink, purple, and black!

However, the pièce de résistance of my day was my meeting with the absolutely lovely ballerina, Suzanne Farrell. Suzanne, who has just graduated from the School of American Ballet and who has just been accepted into the New York City Ballet Company, was also at the performance! Oh my, can you believe it! Imagine what it must have felt like, to share a stage (or at least an audience) with a ballerina who would go on to become a true legend! What a beautiful coincidence - honestly, you couldn’t write this story.

Back in the time travel station and ready for the trip back home, my brain is brimming with all this fashion, history and amazing ballet! This has been another sensational trip! The real bonus? It turns out that after visiting the Museum of Modern Art - I mean how could I not with such exciting collections? - I found some of the most fabulous fabrics to turn into tutus - oh my! Just imagine the possibilities, darling tutus! Maybe I should consider staying a little longer and building myself a dressmaking studio… I do have a spare pink tutu waiting for that purpose, after all!

So there you have it, darlings, another thrilling chapter in #TutuTuesday! And now, remember to twirl like no one's watching, live your best life in your favourite tutu, and get out there and watch those ballerinas! Until next time, my dears!

Your always twirling and always pink-loving ballerina,

Emma xx

Emma's Favourite Things From the Day:
  1. A new pink tutu: No, not just any tutu! I managed to snag the most beautiful silk from Saks - just the colour for a perfect ballerina. And the matching shoes! Oh my, you simply must have shoes that sparkle like the lights of Times Square!

  2. Margot Fonteyn: This ballerina, I just adore her. She’s the embodiment of grace and talent. If only I could be half as graceful. I must be off to London next week to catch a show!

  3. A delicious cheesecake: I know, not the most ballerinasque, but you can’t visit New York without trying a bit of delicious cheesecake! And I might have tried a few, just a few…

  4. That feeling when you walk out into a packed theatre: The excitement and anticipation for what’s to come. What's more fabulous than the thrill of knowing that a performance of pure artistic brilliance is just about to begin? And imagine, all those other amazing ladies and gents sitting in those gorgeous velvet seats watching you too!

  5. A fab little black dress: Because every girl needs one, and I just love a black dress. What will it look like? Hmm.. it must be worn on the 18th! A black dress and a fabulous pink tutu, now that's the kind of combo I want for this Friday night…

Remember, darlings, always strive to achieve your dreams, whether they are big dreams or small ones. There is nothing more exhilarating than reaching the top of the pyramid of your own success, and it’s even more amazing when you’ve worked your hardest to get there! And of course, I wouldn't forget to tell you all that no matter where you’re going or what you’re doing, never be afraid to wear a tutu! A pink tutu at that. It’ll lift your spirits and you might even make some lovely new friends - who knows what could happen when you embrace the magic of the ballerina life! And hey, who knows - if I could travel back to 1956 in my time travel machine, maybe you can do something truly fabulous today too! Until next time! xx
