#TutuTuesday: A Blast from the Past - Ballet Tutus in 1956!

#6522

Hello darling dancers and tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma, your time-traveling tutu queen, back with another #TutuTuesday post, this time taking us right back to Christmas Day, 1956!

Now, you wouldn't think Christmas Day would be a day for a tutu, right? Wrong! Whilst we might be tucking into mince pies and wrapping up the last of the presents, in the magical world of ballet, the magic never ends! It's Christmas, so of course there are special performances. I bet you could picture it: the stage shimmering with twinkling lights, the ballet company looking absolutely exquisite in their tulle gowns, and a joyous atmosphere filling the whole theatre.

Let's just imagine those gorgeous tutus they were wearing! In 1956, tutus were at the peak of their elegant and ethereal charm. Picture beautiful, frothy tulle, meticulously hand-sewn and carefully constructed. Some might have been shimmering with sequins or rhinestones, making them truly dazzling.

Of course, the 1950s saw a move towards a more traditional and romantic style, a sort of "Old Hollywood" glamour that made these tutus even more special. Ballet was truly on top of its game and you can bet that the ballet companies would have put on an amazing Christmas Day performance.

As I hopped back to my trusty time-travel machine (don't tell anyone, but it's actually a sparkly pink Fiat 500!) and journeyed to 1956 London, I couldn't resist popping in to the Royal Opera House. Can you imagine a Christmas Day performance there? I felt such a shiver of excitement, knowing that some of the greatest ballerinas of their generation were getting ready to dance on that very stage.

This journey wasn't all about the ballet, though! A girl's gotta shop, and oh boy, 1950s London was a haven for fashion. Just walking through the streets, with the smell of perfume and roasted chestnuts filling the air, was like being swept up in a movie scene. I picked up a gorgeous floral print dress, a pair of vintage ballet shoes (the craftsmanship, my darlings, is beyond anything we have today!), and even found a vintage pink tutu for myself!

The most wonderful thing about this whole journey was the feeling of camaraderie in the air. Whether it was the people on the tube, all bundled up against the December chill, or the laughter coming from inside a Christmas market, London felt like a real community in 1956. Maybe that's something we should bring back?

But hey, even in the age of the internet and zoom calls, there is still something so special about bringing a community together, just like a ballet performance does! So, let's channel that spirit, shall we? Let's get out there, enjoy some dance (I recommend a good ballet show - they're really coming back in style!), put on a beautiful dress or a lovely tulle skirt (pink, naturally!), and bring a little bit of joy into our everyday lives. And let's remember to spread the joy of dance, one tutu at a time!

Now, tell me, what's your favourite type of tutu? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Stay sparkly and keep on twirling!

Love,
Emma xx
