#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A 1957 Whirlwind!
Post Number 6543
Hello darlings! Welcome back to another thrilling trip through the tutu-ful history of our beloved garment! Today we're stepping back to 21st May 1957, a date brimming with ballet magic, and of course, pink tutus. Let's embark on our time-travelling escapade together, shall we?
This week I find myself in the bustling heart of New York City. The air is electric, buzzing with the thrill of a new Broadway season. Can you imagine, darling? New shows every week! What a joy to have such an abundance of dance to consume.
Stepping out of my pink polka-dot frock coat (just a bit warmer than a simple dress in this chilly May weather) and into the Grand Central Station, I am swept away by the wave of glamour radiating from the bustling crowds.
Even though I haven't seen the new ballet production yet, my anticipation is palpable, so palpable it could even be sensed by the city itself! New York City has always been a true cradle for the arts, hasn't it?
Let me tell you, my darling, 1957 was a thrilling year for the ballet! There are three new Broadway productions and four more major shows being performed around the world! Talk about keeping your pointe shoes worn in!
I just had to snag a ticket to "Firebird", a breathtakingly romantic ballet from that most dramatic of composers, Igor Stravinsky. Can you believe he is composing for ballet? How extraordinary!
Let's travel back in time and take a peek at the costumes, darling. Ooh la la! Imagine a tour de force of flowing silk, soft lace, and an explosion of colour that is positively captivating. They used more silk than we would dream of these days, don't you think? But, the most important detail for me - you can just feel the freedom, the power, the pink shining through! Just beautiful!
I just love how each individual ballet dancer brings such life to the pink tutu - even on the men. You wouldn't dare catch me not admiring a pink tutu, would you darling? It really speaks volumes, a true triumph of elegance. But for now, my darling, it's New York we're here to enjoy!
Back to the Present: What a Whirlwind of a Trip!
It’s absolutely wonderful, you know, being able to see the sheer beauty of the art form come to life. Back in 1957, everyone embraced the simple magic of the tutu! You just don't see this kind of unadulterated appreciation today. Perhaps we need a little trip through time for our world today, a quick reminder that a pink tutu is the ultimate power symbol for a confident ballerina!
And with a flourish of my pink feather boa (always handy for a touch of glamour, darling), I step into a gleaming vintage cab, the city's lights glistening and promising more exciting discoveries in this magical year. Stay tuned for next week’s TutuTuesday - we'll be hopping around to an equally glamorous decade. Until then, dance the day away, my lovelies!
Always embracing pink,
Emma xx
