#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post 6570: A 1957 Whirlwind!

Hello darlings! Emma here, back for another spin through time, this week landing us smack bang in the midst of a fabulously fashionable November of 1957. Today's #TutuTuesday post is a bit different from the usual history lesson. We're stepping out of the rehearsal studio and right into the heart of bustling New York, because that's where the ballet world is all aflutter today, darlings!

And speaking of aflutter, can we talk about these tutus? I'm simply smitten with the fluffy perfection of the tulle, the elegant simplicity of the silhouette, the perfect pop of color with the matching slippers!

Oh, let me introduce myself. For those new to my Pink-Tutu.com blog, I'm Emma, a time-traveling ballerina with a passion for pink tutus and all things dance. You can catch me every Tuesday for #TutuTuesday, where I journey through time, uncovering the story of our beloved ballerina garb and how it has danced its way through history. My adventures are funded by, you guessed it, the wonder of performing in gorgeous ballets across time!

But let's get back to our fab New York in November 1957. What a month for ballet, darling!

New York's Ballerina Blitz

Firstly, on this very day, the 26th of November, the New York City Ballet is taking centre stage. They're opening “Swan Lake,” and the world is swooning! What a way to end the month, right? They've been touring and showing off some absolutely stunning tutu choreography! I just wish I could be there myself, but I have a show in 1920s Paris! Oh, the wonders of time travel.

However, that's not all that's going on, dear readers! In a whirlwind of twirling and tulle, the ballet world is buzzing. Last week, the American Ballet Theatre showcased its talent with a production of "Giselle", showcasing those gloriously Romantic era tutus - the puffed, delicate layers just make my heart sing. This has led to an avalanche of reviews and applause! A few days ago, on the 22nd to be exact, it was all about "Les Sylphides" - I absolutely adored those ethereal and whimsical tutus - all light and air and dreams. And then just yesterday, on the 25th, the* New York City Ballet* thrilled the crowds with its production of "Graduation Ball," which showcases such beautiful choreography!

I could get lost just talking about this spectacular ballet feast.

Oh, did I mention that we're talking fashion, darlings? Tutus are more than just dancing costumes, they are statements of artistry and beauty! They've come a long way since their beginnings and are now synonymous with ballet and feminine grace! And just wait until you see some of the gorgeous designs I found myself waltzing with here in 1957!

The Tutus I'm In Love With

First off, let's talk colour. I can't get enough of these beautiful hues and how they’ve been paired up for a fantastic visual symphony on the stage. You'll be surprised that, as a dedicated pink lover, I found myself totally smitten with a glorious ballet I witnessed last week, featuring a shimmering silver tutu with a sapphire bodice. * Simply spectacular, and totally unexpected, but that just shows how flexible and exciting ballet fashion can be!
And *
we simply must address that exquisite, classical tutu I found nestled within the *New York City Ballet's "Swan Lake"
. It's an absolute dream come true in terms of what defines the tutu in the 1950s*. It’s light as air, a perfectly sculpted silhouette. It’s almost like a little cloud of white. It just epitomizes elegance, don't you think?

But there is something else that’s truly magical about 1950s ballet fashion: * the fabric, darling! * Tulle has gone beyond simply practical, and is being experimented with like never before, which allows the dancers’ movements to take on such grace and airy beauty.

Oh, how I wish I could wear those beautiful tutus on stage. And you know what? Maybe, just maybe, when I travel to 1957 to witness another "Swan Lake" show, I'll slip on a tutu of my own!

I think this will definitely go down as one of the most magnificent years for ballet, in all my time-traveling adventures!

Join me next Tuesday, my darlings, for a peek at the ballet world as we move onto another magical #TutuTuesday!

Now go forth, spread the joy, and make the world a pinker place, one tutu at a time!

Emma xoxo
