#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 6573 - Twirling Through Time: 17th December 1957!
Hello my darling dears, and welcome to another glorious #TutuTuesday here at www.pink-tutu.com! Today we're pirouette-ing back in time to a simply fabulous date, the 17th December 1957, and oh, how much we have to talk about! My goodness me, this date is just buzzing with historical and sartorial sparkle - so grab your cuppa and a comfy seat because we’re going to dance right through this fashion-filled history together!
It's a Tuesday, my lovelies, which means one thing – tutus, of course! I've just popped back from a whirl-wind time travel adventure to New York City, oh, darling, it’s the most marvellous place for a tutu-tastic time! The theatre is buzzing with ballet performances, and the shopping… let's just say my wardrobe’s been graced with some truly magnificent finds! I simply must tell you about the most divine vintage pink satin ballerina top I discovered in a dusty old shop – a true vintage gem.
But we mustn’t get distracted! Let’s bring it back to our journey into 1957. Imagine this, my lovelies - it’s December, and a chill hangs in the air. However, I can assure you, even the crispest winter air can’t stop a ballet enthusiast’s love for a perfectly pleated tulle. And just picture it, a bustling New York City decked out for the festive season. Lights twinkle on Fifth Avenue, snow flurries dust the pavements… and on stage, the greatest ballerinas in the world are preparing for a breathtaking ballet, a real cultural event! It was the same this Tuesday in 1957, the city buzzed with the energy of the festive season and anticipation for a stellar ballet performance - The Sleeping Beauty, my darling dears, a timeless classic.
This date was, to put it simply, an absolutely unforgettable event. The sheer brilliance of the The Sleeping Beauty at the New York City Ballet - you could simply feel the magic in the air! The performance itself was magnificent, and my goodness, the costumes! Picture perfectly delicate tutus, like the flouncy skirts of a little girl's dream! And the colours! A sea of soft pastels - the prettiest ballet pink, dreamy blues, the most beautiful blush of pink – simply magical! Every time the dancers floated onto the stage, a sigh of wonder filled the theatre – they were quite simply beautiful!
I can’t imagine this performance without the gorgeous and elegantly crafted tutus, which, as you can probably tell, hold a special place in my heart. Their artistry, their delicate details, their sheer femininity - there’s a real magic to ballet tutus, darling dears. These are, in my opinion, not simply costumes – they're like beautiful wearable stories, each and every one of them holding a secret history waiting to be revealed.
Back in 1957, the style was elegant and graceful, very similar to today’s styles, but with its own unique charm. The tutu shapes were definitely evolving from the long classical style, and a little more shorter in some companies – and I tell you, that's a great trend ! There is simply nothing as beautiful as a ballerina swirling gracefully with her delicate tutu. I often dream of joining these incredible ballerinas – maybe one day I’ll take a lesson…
Oh! Speaking of magic and stories - how would you like to hop in the tutu-powered time machine and travel right alongside me to this beautiful night in 1957? Let's whisk ourselves away, picture perfect, to that grand theatre in New York City and marvel at the artistry and grace of this incredible ballet performance.
The time machine is waiting my darling dears – let’s get our ballet shoes on and get twirling!
As always, I love reading your comments! Don’t forget to let me know which tutus you’re wearing today – or perhaps tell me about the most beautiful ballet performance you’ve ever seen! Until next time, my darlings, let's continue our dance of style and history, one perfectly pleated tulle at a time.
With a big, pink Tutu-loving hug!
Emma xoxo
