#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Glimpse into the 1950s

Welcome back, lovelies, to another #TutuTuesday adventure on pink-tutu.com! It’s me, your resident time-travelling tutu enthusiast, Emma. This week, I’ve journeyed back to 4th November 1958. Now, you may think a tutu isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you imagine the 50s, but trust me, the world of ballet was abuzz with change and innovation, even if a little more modest than we see today!

From Stage to Street: The Evolution of the Tutu

As you know, my darlings, the tutu has undergone many transformations throughout history. It's gone from a full-length romantic garment to a daringly short, airy wonder! Today, we find ourselves on the cusp of what's known as the 'Modern Tutu Era'. Now, I know what you're thinking - "What on earth does that mean, Emma?" Well, think of it as a turning point where ballet became much more free and expressive! Gone were the days of stiff, constricting tutus. Instead, the focus shifted towards lightness, movement, and showing off those beautiful ballerina legs!

In 1958, the world of ballet saw the rise of iconic ballerinas like Margot Fonteyn. This era was about fluidity, about exploring new and daring techniques. I love how the modern tutu embodied that change – lighter, airier, it became an extension of the ballerina's own body.

New York, New York: The Tutu and Fashion

For this journey, I found myself in none other than the city that never sleeps – New York! Now, New York is synonymous with style and elegance, but it also has a real passion for ballet. Just stepping off the train, I could feel the energy, the buzz of a city constantly in motion! Of course, I had to grab a gorgeous outfit – a fluffy pink tutu and a vintage black jacket – I was a picture of the chic ballet lover!

Imagine my excitement when I saw the gorgeous fabrics! Silk, chiffon, even the odd sparkly tulle - there were all sorts of colours. This was the era where fashion designers started taking cues from the stage! Ballet inspiration began trickling down to the masses – I bet you could find a hint of tulle in your own wardrobes back in 2023!

A Glimpse into 1950s Ballet

One of the best things about time travelling, my lovelies, is experiencing things firsthand. So, of course, I had to attend a ballet performance! This particular evening, the New York City Ballet was performing at Lincoln Center, a venue brimming with architectural grandeur! Just stepping into the lobby felt like stepping back in time – I felt a thrilling mix of excitement and anticipation. I bet you all knew exactly what I wore for the occasion! (Yes, the same gorgeous pink tutu of course!)

Oh, my darlings, I saw such beautiful dancing. I was truly amazed by the graceful movements, the leaps and pirouettes that seemed to defy gravity! The ballerinas seemed to float through the air, like pink, pink feathers being tossed about by a summer breeze! Their tutus – you'll never guess - even the modern tutus of that time still were much longer than we have them today, with a fluffy, almost cloud-like effect, a stark contrast to today's extremely short and revealing styles. But oh my, the colour! A sea of pastel pinks, sky blue, and vibrant whites. Simply exquisite!

Now, my dears, while I don't want to make this post sound too academic – I believe even the past should have a dash of humour, right? The most amusing thing was watching how the ballet performances became cultural highlights. There were ladies who actually wore hats to the theatre! Oh, the fashion, it was simply divine. It was like stepping back in time!

Tutu Tips for You!

Alright, lovelies, so we learned how tutus in 1958 were lighter, freer, and much more fashion-forward! Let's make sure we remember the lesson!

Remember to wear tutus as often as you can! That's right – put them on for that evening with your friends, throw on a ballerina outfit to watch your favorite show – let your love for ballet shine through!

Now, if you're feeling daring, don't forget to check out the shops on my website. There are some stunning 1950s style tutus that'll make you look like a true vintage ballet queen!

And remember to tune in next week, lovelies, for another #TutuTuesday journey! Until then, may your days be full of pink and sparkles!

With love,

Emma (Your Tutu-loving time traveller)

P.S.: If you ever visit Derbyshire, England – you can catch me dancing the day away at the beautiful Buxton Opera House, where I love to go shopping and watch stunning ballet performances! Maybe, one day, you might even bump into me on one of my journeys!
