#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 6634!
Oh, my dears! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, dedicated to the most exquisite and wonderful garment ever created: the tutu! It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another dive into the captivating history of this iconic dancewear. Grab your teacup, darling, because today's adventure takes us back to… drumroll please… 1959!
I've just returned from a fabulous trip back to the exciting city of New York, which, as we all know, is the capital of dance, and my darling pink tutu absolutely caused a sensation at the Metropolitan Opera House! The crowds loved the colour! Now, New York in the late '50s? Pure glamour, my loves! Picture this: elegant limousines lining Broadway, glamorous ladies sporting dazzling evening gowns, and of course, the magic of live ballet performances!
Now, before I whisk you off to my favourite memory from 1959, let's talk about what made tutus so spectacular back then. The '50s was the era of romantic ballet, with emphasis on graceful movements, beautiful costumes, and, of course, the iconic tutu! The tutus of 1959 were all about the dramatic – think layers and layers of tulle, fluffy and frothy, billowing out as the dancers took flight. Imagine it, dear readers – a swirling mass of delicate tulle, catching the light, almost making you dizzy with the sheer beauty of it all! And of course, they were often crafted in the most heavenly colours imaginable, making the ballerinas seem to float across the stage like magical beings.
Speaking of dazzling, have you ever seen the New York City Ballet? Back in the '50s, this was the place to be for breathtaking performances and stunning costume designs! And on this particular day in February 1959, the ballet company presented a revival of La Sylphide, a ballet I'm utterly besotted with! La Sylphide, my lovelies, is the story of a young Scottish lad who falls head over heels for a fairy creature, the Sylph, played by a ballerina clad in a tutu so dreamy it takes your breath away.
I managed to squeeze myself into a front-row seat, right at the heart of the theatre, and let me tell you, it was worth every penny! Seeing the ballerina floating across the stage in a flurry of gossamer tulle, her every movement graceful and magical, was enough to make me cry with joy. You see, the way the dancers were moving and the lightness of their outfits seemed to amplify the magic, leaving the audience breathless and transported. This ballet captured the very essence of romantic ballet – grace, emotion, and a breathtaking beauty that left me spellbound.
But 1959 wasn't just about the stage. Fashion on the streets of New York was undergoing a transformation too! There was a sense of optimism and freedom, and this was reflected in the style of the day. Think sleek, structured jackets, bright colors, and of course, the most adorable little skirts! Even outside of the ballet world, the feminine silhouette was in full swing. Now, if I’m honest, you can always spot a fabulous tutu anywhere, and it never gets old.
And did you know, my darlings, that the popularity of ballet in the 50s gave rise to many famous dance studios, adding to the blossoming talent in the art of dance. Now, I do love going to the theatre. You can imagine my excitement in 1959, the electric atmosphere, the energy of the crowd… it’s enough to make anyone feel like a star. It was pure magic. It's no wonder everyone wanted to dance!
Oh, but the highlight of my trip wasn't just the show. After the performance, I embarked on the most fabulous shopping spree. New York was filled with exquisite designer boutiques filled with beautiful dresses, sparkling jewels, and oh-so-stylish shoes. I fell completely in love with a dazzling hat shop. I practically rolled into my hotel that night with bags overflowing with treasures! But of course, I was sure to snag a little something for my pink tutu collection – a delicate little lace bolero, perfect for a romantic evening at the theatre. I just can't resist, can I?
After a weekend spent soaking up the vibrant atmosphere, I took the train back home. Yes, I have to admit, sometimes, nothing beats a leisurely ride through the countryside. Watching the landscape pass by, while indulging in a hot cup of tea and imagining all the wonderful adventures that lay ahead. The journey was a little bumpy in spots, especially considering my precious tutu collection was tucked into the luggage, but that's part of the thrill of travelling! I swear, darling, sometimes I just need to wear my tutu out and about – the sheer joy it brings me is contagious! You can never have too much pink!
And so, my darlings, that concludes another enchanting journey through time. But the adventure continues next week!
