#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 6683 - 26th January 1960
Hiya darlings! Welcome back to my #TutuTuesday blog, I'm Emma and this week I'm taking you all the way back to the 26th January 1960! Gosh, what a year that was! Can you even imagine the fashion?!
I’m back from Paris! Can you believe I actually saw a whole show with a pink, puffy tutu?! Honestly, I can't even describe it. Absolutely divine. Now, don't think you need to be in the centre of a theatre or ballet school to rock a pink tutu, it's about rocking that attitude, you know what I mean? A little bit of pink magic anywhere you go is all you need to make every day a #TutuTuesday.
Travel by Train
Anyway, back to Paris and that delicious train journey there! Oh, you can’t beat a good train journey. And the people watching, darlings! You know I’m always on the lookout for new ideas for pink outfits. This time, I noticed this lovely lady with a hat that would go so well with my new blush-coloured tutu!
Shopping Trip
And let’s talk about shopping! The department stores in Paris were just something else! I got myself the most exquisite feather boa, so fluffy, perfect for layering under a pink tutu and some silk scarves that I've been using for a bit of 'ballerina chic' on my everyday outfits!
The History Part
I'm Emma and as always, it’s time to tell you all about those historical tutus! It's always so interesting looking back, you know. I love how the fashion changes through the years but that ballet tutu really has stood the test of time!
So let’s take a step back to January 1960 and we are smack-dab in the midst of the Golden Age of Ballet. Can you even imagine a whole decade of ballet? Now that’s a tutu dream come true, darlings! The ballet tutus of this era are incredibly iconic.
Now, we are looking at something called the 'Romantic Tutu.' Think a really, really full, big, poufy skirt that looks almost as though the ballerina is floating! It's created from many, many layers of tulle, a little bit like those pretty, sheer layers that are really popular in our fashion today. It is an absolutely beautiful silhouette, so feminine and graceful. Of course, I always find something to pinkify. They wore beautiful colours in the Romantic Tutu period like pink, yellow and white. Just imagine all those beautiful shades whizzing and twirling across the stage.
The Art of the Tutu
So back in this 1960 period, the ballet tutu wasn’t just about fashion. It represented a beautiful connection with nature and the spiritual, as well as all things delicate and feminine! So think big, swirling tutus as they move through the air as if they are flying, and those wonderful graceful legs!
It’s so lovely to see those connections to art and ballet from such a long time ago, the same sort of magical, inspiring feelings that I have today as I put on my favourite pink tutu, even in Derby!
It's definitely worth exploring if you’re looking for inspiration, you know. It makes my tutu dreams really come to life, when I think of a ballerina swirling and dancing across the stage in one of those big, romantic tutus.
And to be honest, this kind of romantic feeling and sense of movement doesn’t have to stop on the stage! It's a feeling you can create for yourself, whenever you want! Maybe if you have a pink tutu in your life!
What to Do in 1960
Well, if you had gone to the Royal Opera House in London this week you would have seen Giselle, a famous Romantic era ballet with a gorgeous, big tutu, so be sure to look that up if you want a history lesson in tutus! If I were there I'd definitely take inspiration for some pink tutu styling - so think a pink, swirling tutuline dress with big pink shoes.
I love exploring the history of ballet and how those tutus became such a symbol of elegance, grace, beauty and those graceful moves that dancers, ballerinas, you know, just all of us have within ourselves. Even without the dance classes and the shoes and tutus, that lovely flowing, gentle, elegant sense of movement!
I have the same feeling whenever I pop on a pink tutu! Don't worry, if you don’t have one you can get in on the act by wearing a bright, pink dress! Don’t be afraid to express your individuality in a bold, fun way!
